people Ive talked to say there meat shields but i like them. they could be a an annoyance with a new one every turn

Just be warned that if you decide to take daemonhosts you don't get to take any grey knights, so unless you intend to use ISTs and IG your better off leaving the daemonhosts at home.

deamon host are quite unpredictable, because you don't know what power they have available every time. If you are an Ork kind of guy, this is not so bad mabye, but most of the time, this is not so funny.
They are good in CC, coupled with other things, but still, no worth taking them when taking GK in my oppinion. And no, they don't make good meat shield, because:
1) opponenst often ignore them.
OR
2) opponents focus fire on them.
If you really want a firemagnet, get yourself a Land Raider
