Hey guys...some of you obviously have alot more experience with your daemonhunters than I do. I have been talking to a bunch of players about daemonhunters and keep hearing many people describing them (a pure daemonhunter force that is) as a very weak difficult army to play well. What have you guys found to be the case? Are you evenly matched with most armies you face? Or do you find yourselves underpowered unless you use allies from either the Imperial Guard or the Space Marines?

I think we do pay a bit much for our rather limited bonuses, when not against Chaos/Eldar we are reduced to being a slow space marine army that lacks tanks, and any weapons over strength 6.
Now, you can maintain being a DH army, Stormies help with that but still leave us a more bit lacking in the long range heavy weapons and cost alot when you put in having to drop them in Chims or Rhinos, else, they are just that much eaiser to mow down.
Teleporting helps with this however, but you have to take Stormies or alot more GKs in order to harness that.

A well made, pure, DH army can be a force to be reckoned with, however, against anyone but Eldar and Chaos we just turn into a SM army with less troops or a IG army with less Heavy weapons.

Allies help, certainly, giving a GK army IG to add some long range heavy weapons and for a DH army SMs to give it some strong but cheaper then their GK counterparts.. well SMs to help maintain a number advantage.

I personally haven't had much of a problem, but my primary opponent is Chaos, so it's hard to say. I know that they do pretty well against IG still (at least I haven't struggled much), and Orks and Tyranids aren't too bad.

I have yet to loose with my daemon hunters, and the only army that gave me a hard time was believe it or not Chaos... A Thousand sons army with only "sons" and sorcerors.. they are just so damned hard to kill. that being said i have access to a lot of cooler thinks like valkyries and a prometheus... stick with it. i really suggest stormies. they win most of my games for me.

Hey sockmonkey...and the rest of you...what point limit do you guys usually play? Do you play straight daemonhunters or mix em up with IG or SM's ?

I've played straight Daemonhunters, but for a while I was using a Sisters of Battle army with about half the points in Demonhunters. Points value varies, usually 1500-2000.

psycannons and bolts, goes right through invuln saves and we can have lots of them.
No invuln saves = dead eldar.
Not to mention aegis armour and a number of other anti psyker things all GKs have.

i believe that demonhunters r weak in small size battles, but in large size battles, they have the potential of being the most devastating army in 40K as of their special rules and the possible use of IG and SM.

i usually play about 1000-2000 points. qnd i run straight daemon hunters. i use a lord and a small retinue, 2 storm trooper squad in either 1 or 2 valkyries, 2 fast attack units, abd a landraider prometheus... give or take.

Hahaha, I'm back, and the Copper Legion has a few more victories under its belt.

I play a pure DH army, normally in the 1,000-3,000 and so far my pure GK army has suffered only 2 losses.

But stuff like valk's and thunderhawks come in handy :) I got that idea from Sock' and it works well, even if I don't share his love of troopers.

If you've got the money and it's a big enough game, 2 large units of Termies backed up by tons of GKs (the majority in fast attack format) and an Inquisitor with long range blasting power can be devastating, the prometheus and teleport homers are a must, and GK dreads are fairly useful...

There's nothing more satisfying than having your Grandmaster teleport into combat behind your enemy and just start cutting a swathe of blood through virtually everything with ease, Psycannons and Mastercrafted Nemesis weapons are awesome :)

If I can I normally take 2 thunderhawks and 1 valkyrie

i actually go against wraitstings idea. i feel that grey knights are better in small games such as 40min 40k as this prevents the enemy from getting to choose its' real armour and so forth which makes it easier on the tought as nils GK

that said thought i don't ally myself with any other forces really and i have found that foo slogging those expensive grey knights over open terrain can be costly so i tend to stick more of my GK into fast attack options

i have also found that having your termies WALK instead of Deepstrike is VERY effective at saving teh rest of your army from being attacked.

lets face it NOONE wants those guys getting close. add in that they have such excellent saves (as do all termies) are nearly immune to psychic attacks and you need to roll jsut to see if you can SEE them never mind hit and wound menas that while a large portion of fire will be directed at them not much will actually hit and hurt them leaving the rest of your army free to move into place and fire away hurting the big stuff. then drop in the GK fast squads in the back of the enemy forces and bang. they are caugth in the middle.

of course should your enemy get lucky and some how wipe otu the termies..uh..better think of a plan B

Alrighty...I've been looking over the codex and...I have a question for those of you who use the Valkyries (keep in mind...I'm fairly new to 40k as you respond...spelling out the why's and how's of your answers would be very appreciated.) I don't see anywhere in the codex that says you can take a Valkyrie for either your Inquisitorial Storm Troopers or the Grey Knights. That being said I assume there is an official ruling somewhere allowing you to do so or such illustrious players as sockmonkey and Inquisitor Binky wouldn't be using them. Where is that ruling found and what does it actually say as it pertains to using them with a daemonhunters army. I'm getting the feeling I'd like to invest in a couple...hence the question. :)

One other army that daemonhunters will stomp is Tau. The Shrouding is an incredibly annoyng thing to have to face. Believe me- I know.

sorry Knighty!! The Rules for the Valkyrie come in the new forgeworld manual "Imperial Armour" its an ungodly expensive book (100$$) and in it it now states that any Storm Trooper squad, Kazrkin sqd, Inquisitorial storm trooper sqd, Inquisitor+retinue or guard from the "Drop Troopers" doctrin may take a valk for a transport upgrade.

and the whys of it being good first and formost... manuverability. any tactician worth his salt will tell you thats what wins battles. being able to put your troops in the places they are most needed is the biggest stron point of the GK/drop troop army. and the Valkyrie achievs this beautifully, as they come down in your oponants turn your unit can move, shoot and charge in thiers.

second, it adds some fire power to the army 1 las cannon, 2 heavy bolters, and 2 hard points to put what you need... like bombs vs orks, hellstrikes vs armour ect.

third, it draws ALL the fire on the board... no one likes to have units dropped on thier flanks, so they try and kill it but i have never lost it yet.

hope th is helps dood.

Sock, you forgot to mention something about Valks (and Thunderhawks) they cost about the same as a 1000pt army $$$$$. Thunderhawks are like $500 canadian.

So it's not a small or lightly taken investment :). But it is absolutely awesome if you can use them, the firepower of the Thunderhawk can literally blast apart a small army.

Thanks a ton both of you for the intel. The emperor will surely reward you! And...if all goes well...so will my growing contingent of daemonhunters. :)
