I've had a lot of trouble against Mech Eldar.

How should Guard play against Eldar?

Assume that the Guard player is using an all-comers list.

My best mate is an Eldar layer, and we've had this very same discussion recently.

One of the core foundations for taking on this army, considered before tactics, are the weapons you're going to choose. If you've got the models, pack in as many autocannons and missile launchers as possible in order to to take out the Falcons/Wave Serpents early and heavy bolters if your opponent is fielding Jetbikes/Vypers as well. Additionally, Griffons are an excellent artillery choice. The overall tactic we came up with was simple: take out the transports as an early priority and bombard the living hell out of those bailing out - this is where your missile launchers firing frag and Griffons come in.

Don't spread your forces too thinly; a mobile mechanized force has the ability to manoeuvre into position near one of your least protected units, disgorge its invariably unpleasant passengers, and have them take your boys apart piece meal or even worse, roll up your line. Try to deploy your guys with mutually supporting fields of fire in a refused flank and don't isolate units.

As an ace in the hole, you might want to consider taking scout sentinels with AC/ML; if you're fighting a largely defensive battle, your opponent might forget about the reserve you have waiting and not expect to be out manoeuvred himself by your units coming in from his flank.

The above is by no means gospel, there are probably far better techniques out there. One thing's for certain though, Eldar loathe AP4 - take it in abundance. :)

Hmm... I think that the priority target in these case is the tanks. Hydras can pass through the Flat out cover save of Vipers and eliminate the Eldar War-walkers from long range. But for destroy the tanks, HWS with Lascannons and Missile Launchers with the Fire on my target! order are the best option for avoid the Flat out cover.

Fast skimmer tanks can pass through many squads forcing L tests, so I think that merge the infantry squads and ad commissars can be a good idea.

Star lances in big numbers can destroy a Leman Russ Squadron in seconds, but their range is medium. I try to keep the Heavy Tanks separated and as far as possible, providing long range fire support. Punishers, Demolisher and short range weapons sponsons are bad options for Heavy Tanks, Eldars are few with medium armor and short range weapons.

Another problem for squadrons of vehicles is the Eldar squads of Fire Dragons. With their their high BS, Fusion guns and Melta bombs they are maybe one of the best Anti-tank assault infantry of the game. Squadrons of Leman Russ are their perfect targets.

If they deploy psykers, make them priority targets for Elite or Artillery units, they are force multipliers like our Officers and must to be neutralized ASAP.

shrug, i played my friend's mech eldar a week ago with my infantry list.
his mobility was pretty nailed down with infantry lists' ability to just cover the table, caution about wave serpents though since that force field combined with tank shocking multiple units at once can get lucky from time to time.

the seer council was pobably one of the biggest problems, though he sank almost 500pts into that unit, and we all know how damn tough to kill those councils are. but with keeping some extra separation in my units around the area of the council, i did to do my best to limit his ability to charge and break multiple units in close combat.

just the amount of firepower and number of models i had on the table was too much for him to handle.a lot of what mech eldar have is just anti-meq/mech/specialists, which doesn't cope well against infantry swarms with the ability to reach across the table with their heavy guns.

a great fun tip; refer to issuing your orders as 'casting spells' and try to liken each one to its eldar equivalent, like the lasgun order as las-storm in opposition to his bladestorm.

In my experience, until you kill his skimmers you can't win the game. Between the aforementioned multiple tank shocks and the endgame objective grabs, there's no way around it. Besides, his scoring units will likely all be in those skimmers anyway. A Valkyrie might work well since it's a big model and falcons can't push them off objectives.

The other way to win! :soldier:
