Demolisher Sponsons

I just got my Demolisher and am wondering what you guys have used on the sponsons. Its main job will be to protect the HQ, Mortars, and duel Basilisks so I was thinking the plasma cannon to give it some range but for the most part it will be behind cover so mult-meltas would be fine and they won’t blow up on a crap role. I am open to suggestions from anyone.

There are two ways to use Demolishers IMO.

1> Offensive: Go and attack something. Nice tactic with a Hellhound:shifty: or two. Equip with Spons Heavy Bolters and Hull Heavy Bolter. Generally you aren't in range on the first turn, but you can still fire your HBs for the first turn. Always have Smoke Launchers on this tank. This set-up is a little cheaper too.

2> Defensive: (sounds like you). Sit back and let the enemy come. Equip with Hull Lascannon and Sponson Plasma Cannons. The range of the sponson PC's is nice and goes well with AP2 Lascannon. Please deep strike your Terminators!:w00t:

I use both set ups, depending on the game and the enemy.

Cheers, DH
The only way to get plasma cannons into an IG army without taking allies is to put them on a Demolisher. Although I don't use a Demolisher much anymore, I used to use one all the time and I can honestly say that Plasma Cannons are one of my favorite weapons.

After playing many hundreds of games with my IG, however, I decided that I like the versatility of the regular Leman Russ a lot better. The range of the Demolisher Cannon is just too easy to avoid for many opponents such as Tau or Eldar
There are times you'd rather drop a shell on something than herd units.
I would always have a regular Russ as my first Heavy, and a Bassie as my second. I split between a Russ and Demolisher for my third. Since most games are along the long board edge, the Demolisher isn't out of range for more than a turn. It also is much more survivable as an assault tank and moving than a regular Russ with its better side and back armour. I have switched to playing my Demolisher with triple Heavy Bolters in about 80% of my games now.

The problem is they are such a fire magnet. Other players see the Demolisher Cannon and unleash EVERYTHING at it. Perhaps that isn't so bad when it lets the other Armor live.

You cannnnn take a Plasma Cannon Servitor with a Techpriest:wacko: ...............Ya ya o.k., your right!
I was thinking the melts only because the back of my deployment zone is going to be a target. With my HQ handing out leadership, the two mortar squads, and the two basilisks I thought that the meltas would be better because the indirect fire weapons and the meat shield of men would only give them a few heavy things left to throw at me. I don’t know every one seems to like the plasma cannons but I don’t like the idea of blowing my self up with them.

Thanks for the help so far
Zabien, tanks are imune to the 'Gets Hot' rule ;)
Go forth and demolish!

I think Diggums was absolutley correct about the two combinations and their uses. However, I have to disagree about smoke... Ok, it's only 3pts, but IMO you will never be in the situaltion where you will want to willingly deny one of your tanks a round of shooting.

Why I promote smoke on almost all tanks is because if you get shaken or stunned you have a chance to save yourself from another round of fire. I sometimes don't put it on Russes and never Bassies, but I agree with Xethemez, SHOOT, SHOOT and SHOOT!
just put extra armor on your tanks bacause if they are stunned or shaken you can better move your tank behind a piece of scenery and move them in the original position next turn. this way you avoid shooting on your tank and he´s useless anyway that turn.
