I was wondering if it's worth it to take Drop Pods in small-ish games (Less then 1200 points). I'm planning an 750-point Space Wolves army for a doubles championship next weekend-currently, I'm planning on using a Venerable Dreadnought and 3 tooled-up 6-man Grey Hunter packs. To mount the entire army in Drop Pods would run 120 points-that's 16% of my army tied up in, essentially, 4 Storm Bolters and the ability to deepstrike.
However, one of the problems I've been having is actually getting to my enemy-Space Wolves aren't exactly known for their deadly long-range firepower, and the longest ranged weapon this army has are Bolters, Plasma Guns and a Dreadnought AssCan. Plus the fact that most of the Grey Hunters have pistols, and they'll almost always be on the move, meaning that this is NOT a shooty army. So, dropping parts of my army-say, the two Pistol/CCW squads, and leaving the Dreadnought and the Bolter/CCW squad to slog it up the field?
However, that's a risk-splitting my army up in to two easy-to-kill chunks-the opponent I'm most worried about has a hard-on for Havocs, and could probably wipe out both of them in a good turn of shooting. Half my army gone, and there's no guarentee that the other half will come in on-cue, or even in the right spot.
Anyways, what do you guys think? Drop Pods, partial Drop Pods, or just forget them totally?
BTW, my armylist is here.
