Your standard dwarf is a wee bit shorter than your average 40k duder but to give a good idea on scale you can fit 2 normal dwarf warriors in a singe slot of a GW carry case.
To understand the square base thing you have to know that WFB units deploy in regiments and formations. The best thing to do would be to buy the big red book and read up.
