My current army stands at 1400 ( give or take ) pts, im trying to round it out to 1500. Looking at all the viable options, I looked at the doctrines...im only using one 'sharpshooter'. Probily gonna use carapace armour, but regardless I thought about the enginseer. Currently im only using one elite choice so...

The thing that makes him so attractive is having a guy with a plasma cannon... It would also be nice to repair my Leman Russ ( which attracts a ***** load of fire ). So I ask you guys is he worth it?

I don't really think so. Becuase if it gets immobalized then it's OK, can still fire, and with BS 3 even with the new rules moving and shooting is dumb anyway. If the battle cannon gets knocked off, then you are kinda out of luck. But then I'd charge until you get into lascannon range and then try to take out the biggest, baddest thing you can find.

Enginseer w/ Gun Servitor w/ Plasma Cannon and Technical Servitor = 90 points
Chimera w/ multi-laser, heavy bolter, extra armor. = 90 points.

For the points why not just buy a Chimera to attract attention? You'd be surprised how much damage they can do and with, say, a maxed-out Storm Trooper Squad inside opponents will soon learn that they have to kill it or face the concequences.... Even with a standard infantry squad inside the Idea of throwing out in one turn, moving 6': 3 S6, 3S5, 12S3, and, with heavy stubber, 3 S4. Lethal. Better than the old exterminator by a long shot.

I agree that Plasma Cannons are nice but you can get two for only 5 more points with a demolisher. Course, you gotta buy the tank first...

It's up to you but I would say no.

I'm in complete agreement with Sergei...while the Enginseers are ultra-cool looking, you need to think about it. First of all...if your enemy knows he repairs tanks, he'll be hit hard. Very hard. So you'd have to like...keep him in cover and the likes, but even that still won't be enough. Plus, once a tank like the Russ is Immobilised...who cares? You still have 72" of sweet blasting fun. Give it the lascannon so in case one of its weapons is boom-boomed, and you can still do some wicked damage. I'm honestly thinking about taking a Chimera into my army, and like Sergei said...90 points, equal to what the Enginseer was. I had one in my army, then I just realized...he's either going to die or never see a bit of combat. So I honestly wouldn't go with one.

I have a lot of experience with tanks getting shot at and I can tell you that when people shoot at your leman russ, they tend to pull out the big guns. Most of the time, when they manage to hit, the tank is toast anyhow. The Enginseer just becomes a points sink the second that tank is toast, cause he aint all that great without his special ability.

Yeah, I agree. The Enginseer looks awesome, but it can't fix a dead tank. And that's the only time I'd really need one fixed. Immobilised, it still shoots. Weapon destroyed, fire the the hull gun or sponons.

You know what is really irritating about the IG? They keep making these AWESOME models that I would just love to use in my games, but then they suck so bad that they aren't worth their points. I have so many cool looking models that I don't even use cause I'll just lose all the time if I bother with them.
My Space Wolves army doesn't have this problem. All of their special models and characters are awesome too and I'd use every one of them without worrying that I'm spending too many points and not getting squat in return.
Sorry to rant during your discussion here, but I'm tired of it. GW, please give the IG something that not only looks cool, but that we can use too!

As everyone else said, the techpriest Enginseer is not worth the points. Just like most other Imperial Guard characters, they fall short when it comes to making a real difference on the battlefield when you consider their points costs. The Commissar is a perfect example of this, and there is a very long thread on this forum that discusses this topic thoroughly.

You might want to take a Techpriest Enginseer in your army if you are more interested in just playing the game rather than actually wanting to win at any level.

Well look at it this way. You have a lemun russ everyoen is goign ot blow it to hell. A techpriest for half chance making it fixed for like 90 points. True they can kill him but he will be undercover behind a tank how will he die. I am not a big fan of the model but I can see where he can be usefula nd it will be hard for him to be killed.

Well, if you like the enginseer model that much, you could use him as a Colonel in Carapace. Would actually look cool...

It's so wierd, everyone has a Colonel and the model sucks, yet no one bothers with say, Psykers, whose models are awesome, IMO. I'm not complaining about army selection, but maybe instead of all those kick-ass models that no one uses, they could make more Colonels.

Psykers kinda suck...in my opinion anyway. Psycic powers lead down the road to chaos...remember that my friend. For my Colonel I used a Kaskrin Sergeant...awsome model, replaced the hellgun with a storm bolter , leaves me with a great looking hq.

Of course they do. But the models are awesome. A guy carring a staff that looks like it can cungure lightening, while holding his hand out in that 'curse you' guesture...

My model for a Captain is Sly Marbo(Catachan army) when I paint him I plan to put the Bar code decal from the cadian boxes on the back of his neck or at least on his army. My Colonal will be Iron Hand but I will put lieka blade on his shotgun so it doubles as an axe.

i love theck priest for the gun servitors you can use but they kinda suck
Dude, show some self respect and read your posts. I can understand about you not being great at english, but you don't need to be a rocket scientist to know that I's are capitalized, periods and commas are ment to be used, and if you are a sloppy typer please read your posts. Now you've gotten me on a rampage and I conveienently forgot what I was going to say.

A priest cannot take a gun servitor. Oh, now I see. "theck" means "tech". No k, move the h. Gun servitors suck. BS4 is great and all but a Techpriest has only one wound and if he dies you have a thirty-five point plasma cannon servitor sitting on the ground, smoke coming out it's head, curled up in a little ball. Spend the points on line squads.

The one situation were I have had fun with tech priests usually involves a special scenario, like a "take and hold" mission were the "hold" element requires the use of a tech priest and/servitors. Sometime I would like to apply him to another army for a similar mission; i.e. deathwatch and techpriest(s) invade a Necron structure in order to recover something. Ultimately the model holds the value in these missions not the techpriests abilities, but it makes for some fun high-strung scenario gaming.

The best one they can roll IMO, is the one that increases their officers LD to an 18" range. This actually makes the Iron Discipline doctrine worth it.
