Its been many years since I last played and a group of us are finally getting back into BFG. I've had a general browse around and I find that many of the chaos fleets are lacking escorts. I personally like the idea of them but the lists I've seen are cruiser mad. Question is why? Inccidentally I am collecting chaos.

It's because generally chaos cruisers are fairly fast and well armed, and are capable of operating independently much better than, say, Imperial cruisers. This means that the chaos fleet can work quite well without lots of escorts, and since the cruisers are so good, most players take as many as they can get.

Yup - Chaos has the cruisers that can most reliably go it alone, so there's not too much call for escort support.

When you do see Escorts, it's most likely the Infidel class Torpedo boats - much like the Imperial Cobra destroyer, they're really handy for laying down Torpedo salvoes just where you need them... But for a few more points than the Cobra, they double their weapon batteries and sport thicker 5+ armour.

Most opponents underestimate them only to get a nasty surprise when they start punching well above their weight!

Thanks for the feedback. I've made a 1500pts fleet and wondered what the overall impressions were with the veterans:

- Styx Heavy Cruiser (Warmaster Ld8 )
- Repulsive Grand Cruiser (Lance battery upgrade)
- Devastation Class Cruiser
- Carnage Class Cruiser
- Slaughter Class Cruiser
- 4x Idolator Raiders
- 4x Idolator Raiders

Some people will tell you to take out the Styx, because generally the Devastation is considered to be a better value buy, but personally I like the Styx, so I like to see lists that use one.

The Repulsive and Carnage should work well together to give you a solid core of firepower, and the Slaughter is great for hanging back, then throwing it into any weak points in your fleet.

People usually prefer the Infidel raiders to the Idolators, in fact I rarely see the Idolators in lists. I'm not sure why though, since I've not really got any experience with them.

I quite like the list overall.
