so like the topic said im completely new to this game ive been looking to get into it for a while now, a month or two, and i was wondering where to start out. i was looking into getting the Battle For Macragge set because it comes with a lot of the essentials but then again i already know what kind of army i want to build which is an ultra marines, i like their style of play and they just look cool  but i was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction. i also have no problem with modeling/painting since ive been doing it for a while now. another quick question i had was how our army is built such as troops HQ etc etc. like how does it all fit together and stuff like that, i know this is a big post but it woudl be greatly appreciated to get some help, thanks a bunch

Personally I just bought the rule book but then again, I've been playing for longer. The box set is good if you know someone who is willing to play as the nids, but otherwise just buy the rule book and some models you like and go down your local GW.

The force organisation slots are sub sections of an army that reflect a unit's role in the army.

HQ - The leaders
Elites - The small powerful units, or units with a very specific role
Troops - The bulk of the army
Fast Attack - Fast units or units with unusual deployment (such as deepstriking Grey Knights)
Heavy Support - The big guns, includes stuff like ordanance

Hope this helps :)

yeah i understand now what each is but like, idk itts kinda hard to explain haha but what is each used for like does HQ just maintain a position on the map or/ and like elites you said a "specific" role what could one of these roles be?

HQ - They can move around just like all the other units if thats what you mean

Elite - Like they might be the best cc unit in a cc army (like possessed in chaos) or they might be very good at taking down certain types of units (like Fire Dragons in Eldar are good at anti-tank) or they might be more experienced versions of normal units (like space marine vets)

Anything else? ;) Do you want me to clarify anything? If what I've said doesn't make sense, just say :D

Close combat ^_^

Get into cc quicker mostly. Bikes and jump pack units do this very well. Chaos obliterators use deep strike sometimes to attack vehicles or HQ units. Space wolve scouts can do the same trick. Basically the trick is to try to destroy an expensive unit with a cheap one, before your opponent can counter it :D Grey Knights can do this too but they can do it en mass ;)

CC means close combat, i.e hand to hand.

Most units deploy like the rest of the rmy, few units (such as fast attack and headquarters) actually have special deployment rules.

Its all explained in the rulebook far better than we can here.

The battle for Macragge boxset is a very good atarting point for a beginner, it has all you need to pretty much play a few small point games to get used to the rules.

[edit] damn it slaughter, got there before me!

Here's a couple links you'll find useful off the US GW site (not sure which country your from):

Getting Started with Space Marines: has some useful info and a sample army list at the end you can use to help yourself get started (note that everything but the dreadnought is required).

General Space Marine Page: the index of all the Space Marine info on the US Games Workshop site

My best piece of advice would be to buy the Codex first and foremost... it, combined with the advice of people on this forum, will save you a TON of money by helping you decide what you want in an army before you buy it.

Burke1503, if you haven't already I would go into your local GW and ask for a beginners game so a member of staff can give you a basic game- its really educational.

(Slaughter- I WILL pwn you one day!)
so yeah theres a mall like 15 minutes from where i live that has a GW in it and i was planning on visiting there so they coudl help me out better but i wanted answers now haha. i like the idea of buying the rules and a small squad and go from there, and i actually already have the rules but its kinda uh illegal?

You mean the army itself or talking about the rules when you have them?

If you mean the army itself dont worry about that too much when your just starting out none will care ;) If you mean talking about the rules, its fine as long as it doesnt break copyright - so no giving out stats etc. You have to go on the assumption that other people reading the site dont have the rules

Stats/profile- the line that has WS BS S T W I A LD SV on it, this is a stat line the actual values themselves are below the initials.

For marines get a chaplin, and at least two tactical squads, from there it al depends on your playing style.

Tactical squads are exactly that - the guys in smaller armour. Their entry is "Space Marine Tactical Squad". They are the core of the army.

If it's a terminator tactical squad, you will always see the word "terminator" (big armour). They aren't the same or fill the same slots on the force org chart.

Take a look at Codex: Space Marines and notice how the army is divided up and the the full name of each squad. If people are talking about terminators, believe me, they will mention that :).

*Swoops back in* Chaplian are widely believed to be the best SM HQ (personally I prefer Librarians but thats just me :)). Anyway if its a termie chaplain he gets a better save but is slower. I can't really say much else without breaking forum rules. Otherwise they're pretty similar. If he has termie armour give him a termie command squad and put him in a Land Raider. If he doesn't have termie armour give him a jump pack and an assault squad.

Fluff-wise (background) the Chaplain is the religious nut of the force ;) Librarians btw are the psychic guys (they're cool!).

Like I say I prefer Librarians (fear of darkness pwns ;)) and I would suggest a termie squad in a drop pod for him :D Confused yet? XD
