They are generally useful if there is a lot of terrain on the table. Being able to climb over walls is helpful, because then you can approach the enemy behind that wall, in cover.
Compared to the whole point cost of a tooled up warrior flesh hooks aren't very expensive.

They are used to alter the stats of your creatures per the Mutable Creatures list in the back of the codex.

They essentially allow you to build your brood to YOUR specifications, meaning you can field a completely diferent gaunt/warrior/tyrant then any other Tyranid player.

You can find anything on Tyranids and how to customise your Hive Fleet within, surprise, the pages of the Tyranid Codex. But I might as well answer some queries while I'm here.

- Flesh Hooks are useful once you're playing on a field with a lot of terrain. One of the best examples of this is when you're playing by Cityfight rules as walls are considered as "vertically impassable". Even otherwise, they can be used to climb certain terrain and are used like frag grenades in close combat.

- Toxin Sacs are used to increase the Strength of a Tyranid by +1. Adrenal Glands increase Weapon Skill OR Inititive by +1. These are called biomorphs and are used to enhance and create your own mutable genus. Saying that, you cannot spend more than one biomorph for each statistic (Eg: using all for 4 biomorphs for Toxin Sacs on a Gaunt to make it Strength 7 is not legal, as tempting as it may sound.

Feel free to come back to the Tyranid forum, or any other forum for that matter, if you have any more questions along the line. Have fun.
