My wife and children want to try dungeons and dragons type gaming because my missus did it in her youth. Now i dont want to spend any of my wh40k money on this if it proves to be just a fad.
Does anyone know of a similar sort of rpg that is free and downloadable just so i can see if they will play before i invest in whatever Dnd starter sets are availiable

many thanks
Jamie

I did a quick google search and came up with this

It appears to be what you are after but I didn't read it that carefully so it may not, either way I hope it helps!

I have seen a few free/downloadable rpg's before and I would have to say that the one's I've seen were pretty shoddy.

Also, there are several different rpg's out there and they are all for comletely different personality types. D&D, for instance isn't much good for role playing, but it's a great game for people who just want to hack and slash at monsters. The World of Darkness games, on the other hand, are great for role playing and terrible for hack and slash.

My all time favorite RPG of all time, Shadowrun, is an absolutely perfect mix of role playing and hack & slash. It blends the two incredibly well, and is very satisfying to both types of gamers.

I know that most of what I just typed didn't answer your question at all, but I hope it still put things into perspective a little bit.

Why not combine the two and give Inquisitor a go?

You can download the rules for free :w00t: from the Specialist games site.

Don't spend any money by playing it in ordinary wh40k scale by taking all measurements in inches as centimetres instead. You might have to spend money on each character's model (and even less if they're willing to use one you've already got). Even if you're family doesn't carry on with the fad, at least you'll now have some uniquely converted character models for 40k.

Absolutley spot on, I play =][= cos I love the bigger minis, but many players use 40K minis and cms instead of inches

If your wife and kids want something with more of a fantasy element (more Dnd anyway) why not buy the new Warhammer Fantasy Role Play rule book. If it is just a fad you will still have a good source book for warhammer background (though if you don't play warhammer as well as Wh40K...).

If you want to try something different, and the kids can relate to better than DnD you could try Starwars D20. Its a universe they can understand and should enjoy (just tell them they are in the movie) its both hack and slash, but also roleplaying.
plus most of the rulebooks are on PDF format if you can find them and download them, costing you nothing. I use fantasy minitures to model characters for. and am looking at using my wh40k as bad guy soldiers. best of both worlds.

If you really want to try D&D, but dont want to blow wads of cash, try thishttp://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=d20/article/srd35

it has all the rules you need to play D&D for free. Just download them, and print them off at kinkos, for whatever they charge. If that isnt an option , PM me, and ill help you out....
