Ive just recently started playing IG but have noticed their lack of decent heroes (unless Im totally misreading stats/abilities). I took a look at the Demon Prince, various Ork leaders (Ghaz and the one that can turn people to squigs(?)), etc. and all of them well out do our leaders.

My question is why do all of our leaders have pt value needed for the army's but for the most part suck? Im a big fan of Gaunt and his boys but in the end, a single Demon Prince, Ghaz, etc will make them just explode.

Did they recent get rid of that pt. value needed for our heroes and do you guys have any suggestions other than the usual sticking Gaunt in conscripts or a JO w/ Honorifica?

It depends what you want from the special characters. Whilst the others may have amazing stat lines if you compare them to the army they are in its balanced. Eg. Gaunt is dirt cheap for a character (same price as an HSO with a powersword) and does loads.

Tooled up characters just isn't guard at the end of the day. Stat lines arent really what you need to look at for points effectiveness.
The points costs in the codex stand and will do until we get a new codex. they are fair enough, (you wouldn't see a top colonel wandering round with only a platoon and a bit to command now would you!)

Hope that helps

The misconception you're running into is that imperial guard isn't about heroes that are going to charge in single-handedly and wreck an entire squad alone.

Imperial guard are about mere mortal humans, bravely facing down the biggest, scariest, monsters in the galaxy. Mere mortals aren't SUPPOSED to be a singlehanded match in close combat for a daemon prince, a hive tyrant, a wych lord, or anything else. When they win, it's pretty much just luck. But they shouldn't win.

Imperial guard is about weight of fire. Enough shots, enough bodies, enough simple DICE thrown at the problem, it will eventually fall down.

Yea definitely. Its just a bit fustrating to be able to handle mostly any type of squad sent my way but in the end, 1 special character just ends up running rampant on my lines. Hive Tyrant, Necron Lord, Demon Prince, etc, they just basically end up ping ponging off my units.

I like grey knights captains / inquisitors (Damon hunter or witch Hunter) allies. Some of their other stuf's good too. In fact, 9.5 out of 10 i'll use Demon hunters - they are the superior of the two.

I see the lack of super characters as one of the most entertaining things with IG really. That lack is pretty much what makes all other races special too.
We are what they get compared to, so when someone thinks the new daemons in Codex CSM are a bit daft, they can always look on our heroes and say "But compared to that HQ-guy it is still a monster" and feel good about it again.

I also like the fact that we are cought between a rock and a hardplace all through the battle. If we try to run...well, then our Commissars shot us and if we stay those monsters will rip us apart. It was acually that desperate feeling that made me start a Guard army in the first place.

We do have some good CC-units though, but not at all like the other armies, Rough Riders, Ogryns, TechPriests and such.
But most of all we have our guns. Big guns, small guns, medium guns, guns that go BOOM, guns that go Ftzzztakam and even some guns that goes BOOMBOOMFtzzzakamPOFF!
Use them

I find that most IG heroes tend to doe a little rule bending. Take Creed for example: He allows you to choose the scenario or table edge when this should be random and allows a re-roll on who starts plus, his bodyguard, Kell, is not wuss and he costs zero points!

Also, Yarrick and his force field will give anyone who has a strenght value of 5 and less a real hard time hurting him. Shaeffer and the last chancers can give you a very versatile infantry base that has slightly better stats than the average guardsmen. That and you can put about 10 heavy weapons of your choice.

My Favorite of them all is Solar Macharius, he's not in the codex but he is one bad mother!...for a human that is. He's a senior officer with awesome stats and he allows you to start the game...no matter what!

So yeah, the IG heroes aren't one man armies like the Nightbringer or Karn but they change in plenty of ways how you make your army and they also don't cost 250 pts.

I guess I feel the whole point of the Imperial Guard is that they're average people, more or less. I mean, even a Senior Officer is only as good a shot as a Space Marine who has ostenstiably been fighting for centuries. I prefer it that way, to be honest, as its fluffy and makes you very careful (and even sympathize) with your men. I am always pleased with I manage to kill something in hand to hand, for instance.

As for a big giant monster worth 250pts, well, thats 6 lascannon. I'll take my chances with the latter.

Or some basilisks, hellhounds, or a couple squads of plasma packing vets/stormies.

Whichs leads to another point... While many armies specialize and are very good at doing certain things, the IG kills everything equally well with the right kit, and probably for less points.

As far as using Special Characters, Creed helps keep your squads in line and Kell adds some CC punch without fear of losing a bunch of points. Gaunt is obviously the guy you stick in your big squads or your squad that needs to stay put the most, and Yarrick is not too shabby in CC. Even though we only have 3 special characters, any one of the three can be used to fit whatever your army does best.

No! No! No! There are 4 Shaeffer is a decent hand to hand - WS5 and a power sword (and infiltrating.) The last chancers are BS4, COUNT AS A TROOP CHOICE and can infiltrate or deep strike.
And they aren't just heavy weapons teams - deep striking a one man meltagun BS4 trooper has its appeal, or having a demo charge too (Rear armour-vehicles !KAPOW!)
(although, for a example 2x heavy bolters with 4 men are more efficient as a heavy bolter fire support squad, and infiltrate for free)
Ans automatically pass LD tests
- Hey, if kage is an independant character that automatically pases LD tests, can i make him lead a squad? I guess so. Conscripts led by Comissar = LD10, Kage = Automatic pass. (and cheaper!) - and he's got 2 wounds so is actually a pain to kill off in 1x turn of melee to the unsuspecting opponent.
Re-read shaeffers, I have started to love them (and the modelling options are a breath of fresh air) - i'm even considering getting a second one to paint up differently, with a different squad
P.P.S they've also got frag, krak, 2 stat attacks and can have various weaponry - i choose shotguns for non h/w squads so i can charge them if i want, and they can be surprisingly effective - they don't win many fights but they can cause damage, and tie units up.
Oh, and they're scoring units - even 1 man sub units (see FAQ)

Calm yourself. I forgot Shaeffer. No need to have a hairy conniption.

In any case, the last chancers seem so un-IG to me. Nothing against you if you love them like your favorite aunt, but there is so much potential for cheese there it makes my gut turn a little thinking of it.

I agree there is a potential for cheese, but keep in mind the exorbitant point cost payed for that cheese. It might be weak, yes, to take deepstriking specialist chancers, but those suckers cost a fair amount, and three of them will run you only slightly less than a similarly equipped deepstriking veterans squad, and that is without having to take Schaeffer and Kage. Although, the idea of using Kage to lead conscripts warms my heart - although it is cheap and despicable!

They cost only one short of double the cost of a guardsman !
T3 5+ save (for nearly double the cost of a standard guardsman!) nearly The cost of Space Marines !
Arming them costs extra too! (although been musing over power sword squads - 5x power sword nutters for 105 points = 20 power attacks on the charge. Die Termies!)
Have run out of exclamation marks now.

Nokk is great. I forgot about him, but i was thinking we were referring to the codex
Macharius is still quite pap for melee - he has no frags, and 2x rolls are critical on how bad he is. What you do want him for is going first (full stop)

I don't think the power weapon squad would be very effective, especially as your striking at Init 3. termie captain would go first, then termies could decide to just use their normal attacks at init 4 so, you'd be down to one or 2 men before you get to strike, with 5+ to wound and 5+ inv. sv of Termies you'd be hard pushed to kill more than one.
Of course if you kill 2 you've nearly made your points back.. and if you kill 3 you've killed more points than the squad costs. Better hope they don't get shot up first. A 5 man termie squad will turn them to paste from 24"

Well...I just thought I'd point out that there's a few more out there that can be played in friendly games. And now that think about it, there's also Col. Straken(What's this? A powerfist with an iniative of 4?!? Awesome!) and Sly Marbo from the Catachan. Their might also be profils from certain Tarllan and Valhalan caracters that I haven't seen any profils.

I dunno the only special charecter I out and out don't like is Captain Al Rahmen. Maybe something is just missing from the profile online but he feels like a sham.

Yarrick is a beast. I was playing a game of Apocalypse yesterday using him. He ripped through a squad of dark eldar wytches, a dracon, and proceeded to survive two full turns of shooting from O'shava with some body guards, before being splattered by orbital bombardment. Granted against the wytches he had a squad to take the brunt of the attacks for him...

As said before our special charecters can not single handedly win battles. They are great support and fill that pesky secondary hq slot thats about it. Where they are really fun though is in Apocalypse where you have hundreds of men to back them up while they do what they do best.

Plus i mean come on, Yarrick isn't even 200 points!

I dunno about you guys but i have never ever been a fan of special characters. They are so anti climactic. I mean if you kill abandon or Margneaus calgar or schaffer what happens theyre dead. Its cool to have your own custom comanders (guard can do this the easiest with all the spare parts and modeling options) plus their weapons are dirt cheap. Sure a tooled up commander for ig isn't effective but they look awsome and are fun to play with.
