I am really useless at making army lists with maths going wrong everywhere and all my units having eqiupment they don't need.

So I was just wandering if you have any tactics to making a army list?

What do you consider when building one?

Are there any pointers you can give?

Ps Sry if this is in the wrong forum duno where else to put it

I use a good ol' pencil and a sheet of paper. A calculator helps to add stuff.

But for specific advice, a specific army should be part of the question.

Here's my advice. First, think about what army you want. Then think about what type of tactics do you want (assault, ranged, hit-and-run, so on and so forth), then decide what size you want your army to be. Now you have a general idea of what units you want unless you suck, then you should give up Warhammer 40k altogether and do something else with your time. I find that when making a nice balanced army, that can generally try any tactics, it's best to start with the bare minimum, get an HQ and 2 Troops. Then you work your way up. Start with Elites, then go Fast Attack, then go Heavy Support. Now after you have a nicely balanced army THEN you can truly try to specialize it, like if you have a Space Marine army you have like a Captain for HQ, 2 Tactical Squads, 1 Terminator Squad, 1 Bike Squad, and 1 Tank, you can decide what you think suits you best. If you want to go assault, change one Tactical Squad to Scouts with shotguns and such, Change your Bikes to Attack Bikes, Change your Terminators to Assault Terminators, and change whatever tank you have to a Predator Annihalator. If you go ranged change one Tactical Squad to Sniper Scouts, change the tank to a Whirlwind, change the Terminators to Assault Terminators (to defend your ranged guys), and change your Bikes to Jumpack Marines (to keep your enemy distracted). If you want to play Eldar just go to the Army Lists and look at my Biel-tan and Ulthwe armies. They are excellent and have perfect descriptions and how to use each army. I hope you get started well and don't suck. :)

I was just asking for your strategies when making an army list in general.

Are there any ways that really help you make an army list and such?

an army list is an expression of ones preferences and abilities and should represent your playing style and the tactics you will use against the foe for example assault armies have many fast troops good in cc
