Consider the following. A wood elf alter character and a treeman were in combat against a unit of 6 ogres. After a few rounds of combat 3 ogres are left alive and and the fight looks like the following. O=Ogres, T=Treeman, A=Alter

...O O O
_T_____A

Now in the next round of combat another ogre dies. This will result in either the treman to be left fighting nobody or the alter fighting nobody. So what would happen in this case. Would you move one of the charcters to stay in combat or would they be out of combat from then on.
When this occured we moved the alter to stay in combat like this:

....O O
__T__A

Models that are removed as casualties are taken from the outside of the formation. It is assumed the that model has moved into position to attack next round. So you should never end up in this situation. Everything will proceed to shrink down to the centre of where the combat started.

*Agrees with above*

Where possible at least. Say you had another unit in the flank of the Ogres, then if the Treeman kills an ogre and is no longer in base contact, then he counts towards combat res this turn and may pursue etc, but from then onwards he will no longer be engaged.
