So recently I've been looking at the stuff of a poster called Corai on another forum. He's painted up a beautiful bunch of Iron Snakes and its really inspired me to start doing some for myself.

Heres a link to his stuff:Snakes of Ithaka - Iron Sakes Marines - WarSeer

Here are the marines:

They're pretty much done except for the bases. I'm planning on adding a little bit of dead grass and some snow. I've also got to add a banner to the sergeant.

Really fine work, titan136. The snake emblem looks very well drawn, as is the detail on the sergeant.

Any chance of getting a few more close up pics? I'd like to see those shoulder pads.

Lookin' good, probably slightly better than Corai's I would say (though I was following them on the Warhammer Forum), though I can't help but notice that you don't have an apothecary in there... ^_-

The only think I would suggest as an improvement would be to work slightly more at contrast on the gold chest eagles, a wash of dark brown followed by a highlight of shining gold would really make them shine...

Is this the start of an army (a la Corai), or just a way to paint your BfM marines...?

Nice work titan... so besides the Black Templars you are doing Iron Snakes too? Very, very nice! ;)

I have been watching that log on Warseer and really liked how it was progressing as well. The white shoulder pads look really clean and bright, and your freehand icons (from what I can see) look really good. I think that a little more color on the bases will help differentiate them from the armour (they look a little too similar for my taste) and really finish the models off. More pictures!

Thanks mate, I'll see about getting some closer ups when I finish my next batch of marines. Shouldn't be too far from now. Maybe tomorrow or the day after?

Thanks -t. Can I ask about the whole apothecary thing? I'm not too familiar with IS fluff, I just liked the scheme. Is there a reason why people would take the apothecary-as-sergeats trait? I was planning on using cleans and purify.

With regards to the chest eagles, I've done 2 washes of chestnut ink. I'm not too worried about getting these guys to a great quality as I'm just trying to get a large army done in time for the summer campaign, which may or may not include the release of plastic drop pods. My quality painting is reserved for my black templars (aka my babies :p)

Very nice. Finish the plasma gun!
Yeah I didn't notice how dark the plasmagun coils actually looked until i saw the pic. I will be adding a brighter highlight to the coils tonight.

Yep. My black templars are a mechanized tank army but I wanted an army that could be drop-podded and since I've sold off my ultramarines, I thought, hell with it, i'm doing iron snakes!

Yeah the shoulderpads take the most time out of the entire model. Once I get through this batch of BFM marines, I'll be priming the shoulderpads white before assembling the models. Should save me heaps of time.

The first couple of freehand snakes took forever, but i've gotten the hand of it i think.

As for the bases I'll be adding bits of static grass and lots of snow. Should make them more interesting.

While I won't claim to be an expert, I believe that the Iron Snakes always have a squad apothecary because they tend to operate very much on squad level, setting them off in a small, escort sized space ship and letting them do their own thing, only coming together in larger forces when problems have been identified that require it...

I might be wrong, but that is what I got from Brothers of the Snake, anyway.

Well the Iron Snakes are not organised according to the Codex Astartes in that they don't appear to be formed into companies but are assigned to squads that are named for their original founders back when the Chapter was first created. I think it's because of their unique mission, which is to protect the Reef Stars, which means they're frequently spread out and can't concentrate their resources in company-level formations as often as they would like, which means that each one will need to have an Apothecary on hand to extract the geneseed when their brothers die. The problem with the Traits system is that you have to give the Sergeant the Narthecium and Reductor so that leaves you without a Sergeant and isn't fully Iron Snake-ish either. So really it's not mandatory, though I can't see Cleanse and Purify as being fluffy either.

Updates!

I've not got 20 iron snakes (10 tacticals and 10 devstators)

here are some details on the pads. I'm giving them squad specific right pads and iron snake chapter left pads:

the next batch waiting for prime:

also started on a couple of sergeants for the tactical squads:

Looking fine Titan. Very nice work.
Not entirely sold on the spean/javelin thingys (whatever they are called), they seem a little over-bulky to me.

Legionnaire, I believe that those parts come from the Champion of Slaanesh on Daemonic Steed model, or the Boobworm, as I like to call it.

If this is gonna be updated regular-ish, I'll stick it over in Projects.
Thread moved.

Ooohhh... where did you get your metal assault marine legs from? They're rare indeed.

Nice work. I usually don't like metallic schemes- they remind me of unpainted minis I think- but yours look really good. The metal is a really strong and solid colour. Nice. Have you thought about a light green glaze on the gold? That might make it pop a little more than the chestnut (just keep it light!).

I want to say that we have the same bases... I use them too... they need a lot of clearing... mine though did! I am speaking of the sergeant's resin base!

And the plume is from Dark Eldar?

Keep up the wonderful job... 8Y

Glad you guys like them. The plumes are from the Fantasy Slaneeshi Champion. The legs are actually not metal, they were just cannibalized from a marine with metallic scheme.

Quick update on the army:

I've completed both devastator squads and most of both tactical squads. Added in another small flamer squad for fun.

here's what I have left to paint before I'm up to 1200 points:

1 plasmagunner
2 tactical sergeants
1 Librarian in terminator armor

I've also gotten my hands on a couple of FW dreads (one venerable, the other regular) so those will be added to make the army about 1500.
