For all those that have been following my conversion of a Warsmith http://www.librarium-online.com/forums/modelling/111889-wip-iron-warriors-warsmith-conversion.html the time has now come to start painting him!

At the moment all I been able to do is apply the main metal base colour which is of my own mixing(think of Tamiya gun metal and you're pretty close) Here he is so far:

I've put them as links because I want to show them as big as possible!

The next thing to do is give it a selective wash of 50% black ink and 50% brown ink. Then I shall start on the gold. Does anyone have any good mixes of gold shades they would like to share?:) Comments, criticisms and, most importantly, advice welcome!

Until next time

That is truly an amazing conversion, my only prob would be the chains on the servo arm and his left arm are sticking out a little too far, but other than that great. Can't wait to see it painted ;Y

The more recent iron warriors i have painted (combi plasma terminators and some normal marines) I have used tin bits as a base coat with a heavy coat of shining gold on the top, then i used a 2:1 mix of chesnut ink and black ink to dull it down.

I dont want to keep on posting my models on other poeples logs, so, there are links to my photobucket account in my signiture, under the 'IW' folder for those that are interested.

Reference material(PIC HEAVY)

I thought I might put this up now before I forget. Thanks for the comments so far!8Y

As I've said in the conversion thread, I want to paint the war hammer head to look like its bright hot metal and therefore have gathered a bit of reference to use. Now a nice guy like me couldn't resist sharing it!0:

Any suggestions?

Can't wait to see this finished. I am not sure how you will get the bright color that you want though. I am pretty sure some of the good painters here know.

Im thinking of doing my terminators with glowing blades too. I was thinking of using the same method that people use for lava bases

My idea would be to use very thin layers of a mix working from red gore to bright yellows mixed with whites. 4:1 water to paint ratio to keep them super smooth and thin. Then coat it all in a very thin layer of red ink then a thin layer of glossy varnish.

blend up to bad moon yellow, yoiu can add some white if you feel you must. Go as far into red as blood red and shade down with chaos black which you can blend into a metallic if you are that way inclined. Gloss looks quite nice on it too. Remember that the glow is a colder colour than the source.

I don't know if it's just me, but in some of the hot metal pictures, it looks pretty dull and, well, non shiny:) Perhaps either a matte varnish or (more likely IMO) a satin varnish, which can be given by just watering down gloss varnish.

Thanks for the painting advice. I think it would be best for me to try out the glowing metal effect on some old model..at least a few times to determine the best thinness for the paint. Unfortunately I can't do any painting today as I(and my parents) am completely clearing up my room. Chances are I can't do any for a couple of days*insert crying like a baby on the floor emoticon here)

Until next time!

p.s. keep replying so this thread stays near the top:p thankyouplease

Hey mate, I am halfway through a Forgeworld Avatar that I have done with the hot metal effect you're talking about.

He seems to be working so far!

I basically blended from red gore, up to skull white;Vallejo straight yellow at 50 : 50. Red Gore, blood red, flaming orange, blazing orange, yellow, to white, in about 12 layers.

Beautiful model but...

WHERE'S THE GRIBBLIES!?!!!?!

Even though the rest of his body has been pretty visibly mangled, the neck of the decapitated Space Marine is pretty clean, like nothing really happened at all. There should be little gribbly pieces of meat gushing from the body and dangling from the helmet. Add just the hint of a spine dangling from the helmet for a slightly more violent-looking decapitation; more like it was pulled off, rather than cut or severed.

I know, this is your painting thread, but I wanted to get this to your attention ASAP, before you start to do detail work. It should still be pretty easy to add a few bits of GS here and there and still have it blend in with your painting.

Other than that, it looks like your off to a great start on your painting! The hot, glowing metal effect should be great for his hammer. However, might I suggest that the effect might be used in other areas? He's supposed to be a 'leader' (if not an HQ choice, if I don't miss my guess). It would be great for several other parts of him were to glow red-hot, as if the warsmith was constantly being consumed by scorching warpfire within his armor, firelight flickering behind the eye-slits and grill of his helmet, and leaking from various joints in his armor. It would add a whole new dimention to your model; like he was deamon-possessed, or especially blessed by the Dark Powers he serves. He would definatly look like a chaotic marine, rather than just an 'evil' marine. This could also represent upgrades and wargear, such as Deamonic Visage, Invulnerable Save of some sort, Marks of Chaos (Undivided), and so on.

Just a thought here and there... I hope that had helped or inspired!

Yaay! I can start painting again now.

Sonoftheforge- DAMN YOU! I wanna sculpt flames coming out of his eye sockets now! I guess there's always a next time....
Also, the reason I didn't go further with the bionic arm is because I'm scratch-building a new one at the moment which will look better. Also the severed head will have spinal cord running out and some flesh, not to mention a few blood vessels...:X
Aaaand, I'd like to try out some blood effects for painting as well. What I'd like to have is blood running down the claw blades, dripping off and having a few blood spatters on the leg where the severed head is above, etc, etc...gruesome stuff, maybe.

Solo- Thanks for the pic and info, it shall be tried out tomorrow!;Y

Hope to have some pictures before the end of tomorrow!

UPDATE!!!!!

I have finished the Boltgun metal areas, but now it's dark and I can't get any decent pics. Tomorrow I will take some pictures in decent light(for once) and then I shall start painting the gold bits!

I'm painting this guy in between my GD07 Orc boss mini and I hope to have that finished in a couple of weeks...

Everyone please bear with me, it's been a very tough and stressed month for me and if I try and paint in that kinda mood well....minis do fly lets just say. ;)

I present some pictures, at last!!

Ok, It's sure been a while since my first batch of pictures. Since then I have pretty much finished the iron metal, except for a little mithril silver in places, and the basecoat for the gold has been put on. Another thing is the yellow on the dead marine. Obviously gonna need a couple more coats...Which reminds me. I seriously need advice on painting yellow!
So, here he is:

I'm really sorry for the poor picture quality. If it's sunny over the weekend I will certainly get better pics, as I definitely will be doing some painting over the weekend before I have to get back into the hassle of school...

Enjoy!

EDIT: Seasonreaper's just reminded me. If I want to post pics of the new bionic arm, can I do so here or do I need to put them in the conversion thread?

Post the pictures of the arm here, its project realated, I wouldnt worry.

Yellow. I use a base coat of Tau sept ochre before about three or four very thin coats of sunbusrt yellow. I then wash the entrie model with REALLY watry flesh wash then i paint another coat of yellow depending on how dirty i want the model.

Nice work, get it finished.

Also, were are the chevrons? Im not going to call you Brother unless there are chevrons.
