Hello,

Someone said to me today 'why don't you try and make some cash selling painted minis - I know this guy who knows this guy who's making a living out of doing that... etc'.

Now I thought, making a little extra pocket money is probably a possibility if you know where to advertise but it's a pretty obscure service. So I was wondering, have any of you ever commissioned work, if so what and roughly how much was it? Where did you find the service? What do you think... is there monkey to be made painting other peoples minis - and just how good would you have to be to do it?

Probably not, many models that sell as pro-painted on eBay probably sold for far less than the time investment spent (if you average out in terms of an hourly rate). If you could get a really quick way of doing rank and file to a high standard, then you might be able to charge a few quid per model, so maybe get £4-6 per hour spent on them...

However you are only likely to get REAL money if you are selling a GD or similar award winning piece as it is a "famous" piece, even if other modellers have approached that standard. I would much rather do a regular job paying far more and spend the time when I get home painting my own models...

I agree with kithre if you look on ebay etc these pro painted models normally dont sell for alot more than new price. Something converted and painted well will do but for the time invested on min wage you might as well for just worked half the time spent on models to sell. The other things that sell well are gold deamon winners or stuff from people who have won golden deamons. So if you really want to do it go for it but really dont expect to make much. Unless of course you grab your self some good painting awards. There again that said atm people are paying less for stuff, but i still say go for it give it a try no harm in trying it out!

Who knows, might be a niche market in Britain, though I'd say it's more likely to earn a living painting anything compared to painting models, and that's still pretty tough.

I have to agree with the other posters it's a none starter, work for Eavy Metal and you might make a decent living (though if GW pays them what they pay the store staff don't hold your breath) but painting and selling minis can't see how it would pay the rent.

First of all you didnt really specify whether you were talking about being a painter for hire or selling on ebay, or your own store, etc.

There are lots of ways to make good money off of GW on ebay if you're smart and patient.

As a painter for hire you make even more because the models are supplied for you and all you're doing is trading your time for money. If you make sure you are getting paid a decent rate/hour you are making good money for something you are good at.

If you're just trying to make some extra cash here and there and not trying to do it as a career that is definitely possible. Paint models in your spare time for fun and then sell them. If you're working a normal job and selling models here and there on the side you're winning.

The other thing people often overlook are scenery pieces. People are selling fairly crappy scenery for a relatively large amount of money (and high shipping costs) and people are buying because they are lazy. If you have access to pink foam and a cutter and some time you can make a lot of $$$.

That is just a few of the ways to make money off GW I just don't feel like writing a book.

Well I don't do commission works myself but a friend does...
He basically takes contact with the people wanting stuff painted/built and painted and makes up a reasonable amount that's acceptable for both parts.

I'd stay away from Ebay and such, get a group of people and form a community around yourself where you let people know that you do commissions and you'll get a couple...

But I'd see it more as a thing you do by the side of any job you have, i.e your spare time.
