IM NEW TO WARHAMMER 40K AND I JUST GOT THE BOX SET... IN THE RULE BOOK IT HAS 6 TYPES OF SPACE MARINES: BLACK TEMPLARS, IMPERIAL FISTS, SPACE WOLVES, ULTRAMARINES, BLOOD ANGELS, AND DARK ANGELS. I WAS WONDERING IF THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE 6 TYPES. IF THERE IS WHAT DO YOU THINK I SHOULD GO WITH??

Re: RE:

They can outshoot almost every ovther race, they have large amounts of infantry and, they have the largest variety of the best tanks in 40K. Do not underestimate anyone or anything, like, the Orks may look tough but they are the worst at shooting and the Space Marines have great armour, great ballistic skill and good leadership but, they are easily outnumbered, outgunned and they have a high points cost.

Which army?

Glad to see you've joined us.
Like the Col. I play Imperial Guard.
If you like lots of tanks, this is the army to have. A lot of armor with many variations, each designed to perform a specific function.
You can pick one of several different uniform types also, from the Jungle fighters of Catachan to the dress uniforms of the Mordian Iron Guard, or even have one unit of each different type.
You have more choices with the IG than any other force.
But the choice is yours. Pick an army you think you would like to command and go with it. Every army out there has its weak points and its strong points. Go with what makes you feel good.

As i can vouch for the welfare of the Space Marines...choosing which race to play is a key factor in how you play and see the game..Dark Eldar are good but they lack armor..Eldar are great if you like energy weapons and anti-grav technology as well as the Tau..but when it comes to the Tau they get ripped up when it comes to close combat. The Orks are an ok army to field..they require a lot of numbers and heavy support and they arn't very good with hitting anything...Imperial Guard are all about blowing things up with their tanks..and i am definitely all for that and yeah they have the best variety of tanks..but there are always something wrong with every type of army..here it is that lasguns definitely not the best weaponry..Space Marines may be mainstream but you have to look at all the chapters..every one being different and having they're own special rules..Mine for example are BloodAngels..and i picked them because they best fit me to who i am..I prefer close-combat and hard hitting specialists and the bloody choas of battle  Necrons would be cool to field i think but i get turned back from them cause they are not hard to paint or equip and i really don't like machines as well as muscle and brains..Chaos are pretty cool..they require a lot of detail and they always put a good fight when i face them on more than one occasion..Tyranids i would never think to bother with cause like i said before i like brains and muscle and they don't fit my style. Sisters of Battle i don't know enough to coment on so i won't go there. Its a fun filled game and i say welcome to the show..enjoy the game as its action packed and you can only get better by learning to.

The Ultramaines is a good alround, choice. Myself I collect and play Dark Angels and in my opinion they are a better alround choice than the Ultramarines, due to their special rules ( Deathwing, Ravenwing and Intractable) and they have a cool background.

But thats just my opinion...

First off I would say think of 40K as a hobby first and a game second. 40K is simply too expensive to get into if you approach it as just a game. There are other Sci-Fi skirmish games out there (like I-Kore's Void) that are much cheaper to get into if you just want to play a game. GW's minis/rules are pricey...

Given that you want to collect and paint an army, I suggest simply finding an army that fits your painting style. If detailed painting is not your bag, maybe models that can look good with simpler schemes (space marines/necrons) might be your style. Maybe the idea of painting unit after unit with minimal variation would drive you bonkers. An army with a variety of units like Chaos might be a better choice. If cost is a limiting factor, you might want to consider an army that requires less models. To field and effective 1,500 point Ork army you need a LOT of models.

On the gaming side, as most folks have posted each army has a particular tactical 'flavor'. Space Marines are more of the jack-of-all trades. Good leadership, toughness, close combat, and shooting abilities, they are a very well rounded army and can do well in a variety of situations. I recommend new players always learn to play the game using them. Another key factor of using marines is that they are more of a 'forgiving' army.

As an example with a tyranid army, poor deployment of troops capable long range, hard hitting, firepower might spell doom for winning a battle. Most of the troops will be effective in assaults, but have poor armor saves. Running across the board without much cover means most of the army can be torn to pieces by ranged weapons. Space Marines, because they are so well rounded, can be more forgiving when a player makes a tactical mistake.

COME TO THE DARK SIDE, my padawan, and begin with BA! They're the best HTH, Ultra sux at everything, DA rox with elites...

hishamEQ, I believe my Tyranids army can tear away everything in sight if I make it thru.. using DEEP STRIKE and INFILTRATE, and ATTACK with D5-6, LEAPING, FLYING with wings and another D6 when not shooting.. so in one turn u can walk about 20-30 inches... ;)
