Vote: 40k Campaign

Just with a little thinking about it this is what I came up with. Try doing a simple node campaign with about 4 missions for each player that is interested. Divide the players into two teams and give the campaign a common storyline. At each stage you have certain objectives that need to be fulfilled, but the teams can work out which player they want to tackle each objective giving a bit of strategy gaming.

Level 1 - The offensive forces land
Offensive Forces - Objective 1 - Secure the Spaceport Tower to allow reinforcements (Take and Hold)
Objective 2 - Conduct a Night Time Raid on the Facility from another angle to guarantee control
Defenders - Objective 1 - We have spotted a weakness in the enemy landing zone. Hit this spot and break through to assist our other forces (Offensive forces would defend on a rearguard mission)
Objective 2 - Seek and Destroy any landing forces.

So in this first part four battles would be fought (8 players over two teams), each team gets an equal opportunity to attack and defend and the players from each team can allocate who gets to take each role, eg they may send the Imperial Guard player with armor to defend the spaceport and the dark eldar player for the counter attack.

After this throw in some KillTeam, some Combat Patrol maybe to speed things up and work from there. This is just an idea though. A map could be drawn up to give the fluff/story background.

Hey, I just voted none to be honest, but i hope to get a big big game of fantsay like last year, perhaps 3v3 1500pts again since i do have at least 1500pts with me o_o.

But i was hoping to have to take a 40k army but with the lack of space in my case so its one or the other, i might be able to get a new bigger case which holds double to GW cases for like £40 :shifty: :shifty: .
Anyways well see what happens.
I voted for a warhammer tournament as I have never played one and it would be good to play against some other armies in a light competition. 2000 points should be cool for the games.
Toastee I voted WHFB Tourney, but I not really bothered as long I I can play Fantasy Battles since I don't play 40K yet and waiting for the new Orks to come out ;)

So anything FB would make me happy :)
A campaign would be great, get some of the fluff-masters onto working out a background.

The campaign form being basically a more fluffy tournament, I'd prefer everyone to submit their say 1500pt army lists and then develop a nice story. Then we could post the results and what happened (and to who...) on here. The "LO" campaign.

We need to decide first - setting. I say Eastern Fringe simply because we might get Tau players popping up and that's the only place that makes sense for them.

We need to decide the campaign objective - a mighty Chaos Artefact? A lost Imperial Titan? Some ancient Eldar weapon from before the fall? (I particularly like this idea, as it would be a useful plot hook for the Necrons - think Winter Assault) Or alternatively some Necron installation?

For "sense" purposes, it would probably be best to explain the various Imperial Forces as part of a crusade, otherwise it is non-sensical that they would all happen to turn up at this same spot independantly.

Then we need to work out plot hooks for the various factions. Using the example of the "Eldar Weapon" (such as the Talismans of Vaul/Blackstone fortresses) e.g.:

Chaos presence: There to capture the artefact and corrupt it.
Imperial presence: There on crusade to destroy the gathering forces of Chaos.
Eldar: There to recapture their weapon against the Necrons.
Necrons: There to prevent the Eldar regaining their weapon.
Tau: Alarmed by the incursion of so many armies near their borders, and so investigating in force.
Tyranids: Splinter fleet attracted by the accumulation of biomatter.
Orks: They just like to fight :)

I'm sure one of the many worthy authors/fluff-meisters on the site will be able to write a narrative introduction, and then a narrative conclusion from the results.

Addoran - I like where you are going with this, sounds like it could be fun.

The main reason I suggested a structured campaign is due to the time constraints of playing battles. Even with the best will in the world and two full days in Warhammer World, things take time to set up, battles go on for a long while and people get the "OOO shiny" response to things in the GW store/miniature gallery  .

By committing to a sort of structure before hand there is a good chance of getting some cool battles in. The only thing to watch out for then is when the structure starts impeding peoples ability to have fun, but if its kept short and sweet I hope that wont be a problem.

Maybe people try and bring
1) A Kill Team List
2) A Combat Patrol List
3) A 1,000 ish point force

This way there is potential for small games over quickly as well as large battles that won't go along too long unless we group people together (Megabattle!).

What about a narrative campaign (when the armies that will be being brought are finalised) which will take in a lot of the combat patrol sized clashes and culminating in a final larger scale multi-player battle? ..something along those lines anyway
I vote for none.

I would rather have the chance to play whoever whenever, yes a campaign or tourny could be fun but as it is only the second time and who knows how many will appear.. I say a free for all.

If theres a 40k campaign I dont really want to be playing Kill Team to be honest. I'm not that much of a fan of it.

Though in all honesty, I'm up for just having some normal games...with maybe a big battle or two. 40k on the Saturday, WFB on the Sunday?
I've been giving it some though actually, and I realise my idea is too ambitious. Even with all the time to organise until July structuring the event into a Campaign so much would probably ruin it. Having to play a load of Kill-Team which few people like and having pre-set battles rather than just being able to pick up and play would ruin a lot of the spontaneity of the event. It would also be unfair on Toastee to expect him to organise it all.

However...I've got an idea for one final day.

How about a small doubles tournament? Say 750 points a side, pair up with someone and plan your army lists? Extra VP for fluffy combinations? It wouldn't consume the entire event and I think it would be a nice change.

Anyone agree/disagree?
I like that idea, aye, though I think it should be more 500 points per person, as 1000 point games don't take as long.

Though I'm still quite happy with doing normal games, with a two big battles. One on each day.
At the end of the day as long as there is gaming everyone will be happy. I mainly threw the campaign out there to see what interest there was in such an event, but for the social side just having battles between who is there on whatever game system you prefer is a good call. Plenty of mingling done.

Besides, 6 months organising a campaign and then as soon as the miniatures hit the table it'll all go south anyway ;)
Heh, well all the ideas are welcome. I'm just trying to see what'll fit into the event program best.

Speaking of which a rough version should be up soon, along with a set date.

This sounds like a rather fun idea, though I think I'll have to agree with Toastee about 500p per player might be better. I would also suggest that the Combat Patrol rules are used so that we won't see anything like a Greater Daemon or Daemon Prince in such a small battle.

Extra bonuses to players with fluffy combinations might be fun, though I think that randoms teams might be even more so. That would limit the powergaming and make the game more about having fun, getting to learn the three other players at your table and learn more about their armies. Randomize the teams and the opponents each battle or something similar.

Just an idea.

speaking for myself, i am pretty much a novice at 40k, and would appreciate a fun friendly environment with more experienced players showing me the error of my ways- smaller points values would also help as i collect mainly FB and can only just scrape together a valid 500 pts of IG or eldar!

yeah I also I'm mainly a fanatsy player (I can't even play 40K yet) and if I have an Army by the it would either be a small ork or possibly a small =][= force :)
T sounds like the guys want a couple of tourney

if you guys want tourneys then i'd suggest the sat for the 40k 1500pts

and the sun for a fantasy 1999 pts.

a 4 round tourney shouldn't be too difficult to organise for each day and for those guys who don't have 40k or fantasy then im sure that a couple of campeigns could be organised for each day.

but your the organiser T not me (for a change:w00t: )

that sounds like a good idea
You guys must remember that Warhammer World closes early on a Sunday. I can't remember the time but it was around one. It would be difficult to get four games played on the sunday of anything except small 500pt ones. Myself and Morden were pratically thrown out of the place on Sunday afternoon.............
