While I agree that it gets a little snare drum heavy, and Lyrically is not brilliant, it is none the less an amazing album. The Metal in Metallica has been missing for several years and I think St. Anger puts the aggression back into thier music, hopefully it stays...
It's gotta be hard to be full of rage when your nearing 50...
Yeah... They've definitely returned to the more heavy style but it is a different style to their old stuff. It's without a doubt the most agressive album since 'Justice'.
I saw an interview with Lars and Rob yesterday where Lars said:
'I guess you could say that we made this album so we wouldn't have to beat someone up!'
and then Rob continued:
'But it's not an evil album! Kinda like Mike Tyson whamming a punch bag and smiling at the same time!'
Okay, I got it now, didn't have the time to listen to all the songs though. I must say it sounds pretty good, not as hard as the stuff I usually listen to, but good enough. The thing I really miss in all of Metallica's songs is screams and/or grunts, I need that in music .
St Anger rules!!!!! ive been a big metallica fan for ages, i like load/re-load the only dissapointing thing about st anger is the missing solos but if you listen carefully there is a few toned down ones in some songs, i guess kirk's just save it all up for the live shows. lyrically it owns all death/ metal bands, just cause its got some real meaning behind it doesnt mean it sucks. as for james' growls thats the metallica signature singing, do you know how many other bands try and copy that?
*picks up axe and dares some one to say 'sellouts'
Although I do like Metallica I have to say they are sellouts. All that crap about shutting down Napster and "You have to buy music to make music" is bullsh*t. When you start seing a band in a commercial or cancelling a concert becuase it wasn't a sellout you know they are sellouts, just listen to "Hooker with a Penis" by Tool, it explains it all.
The first time I've listened to the album, I thought: “What the hell, where is Metallica here? I was waiting for the new album of them for too long to listen such a music. Then, I downloaded words of the songs, and I was amazed. I’m russian, you know, that’s why such a thing could happen. So, now I think the album is great, it’s so related to real life! And what about the drums? The guys are very concerned with the new flows in music, they walk hand in hand with the time, and that’s all. I think it's very fresh, energetic and full of life.
I'm a big fan of metallica, and i have to say that this album is
the worst crap they've ever done. After Black Album they've gone down in quality with the years. Guess the buscrash destroyed their music completely.
It's not metallica, they're in disguise!½ NOOOOOOOO!!!
I was horrified when I first listened to St Anger, a few listens later I'm less shocked but still pretty scathing.
I first stared listening to Metallica during my formative years living abroad, partying harder than 12 years olds had a right to party (gotta love international schools!) and the Black Album is still a firm favourite.
I think that they became more polished during the 1990s, if at the expense of some of the raw power that they had. I Disappear and S & M showed that they were possibly at the peak of their powers, and justifiably so.
Then they bugger off for 4 years and come back with something that I could have recorded with my mates in my garage! Unintelligable lyrics that make no sense like "my life stlye determines my death style" What they heck is that all about!?!
If you want to see how far they've fallen, go and look at the lyrics to "One" and match it with the fury they delivered it with and you can see why I hate St Anger, it has all of the energy with none of the style, or guitars for that matter, and with 3 people apparently playing the damn things why can we only ever hear the bloody drum kit?!
St Anger would sound a lot better if they'd produced it to the kind of standard we've come to expect, get the sound balance more in favour of the string instruments and work from there.
Sorry, that was a bit of a rant, but I really can't stand listening to their latest offerings compared to their brilliant back catalogue.
I like Metallica's music at least decently. They aren't, by far, my favorite band, but I have one of their older and one of their newer cds. I don't have, nor want their newest one. I'm not here to start up a huge debate, but my personal opinion of them went down the crapper when they started up that anti-napster stuff. If you're going to be that greedy about money... I mean I understand their side of the argument, but IMO, cd's are just too damned expensive. Anyway...so that's my rant .
Oh come on now! This album is total rubbish. Metallica has completely lost their edge. I thought that Rob Trujillo would fix that, but apparently not. Granted bands are supposed to progress and do new things, but this.....this is NOT Metallica. This is processed trash. It's better than Re-Load, which doesn't say much at all. They've completely sold out to the current MTV generation. I mean FFS, you know there is something wrong when Avril Lavigne (is that how you spell that wench's name) and Limp Bizkit are are invited to play at a tribute show, while Anthrax and Motorhead are not.
BTW, I've been listening to Metallica since ...And Justice for All came out; they represent my childhood and my beginning adolescent years, which makes all of what I said that much harder to say
