Right, so I just recently got back into the hobby, and I'm wondering how feasible this army actually is:

Heroes:
3 Empire Engineers, 199 pts (2 with light armour)

1 Steam Tank, 300 pts

3 Cannons, 300 pts

2 * 10 Handgunner 200 pts (Both Marksmen with Repeater Handguns, no SB or M)

Total: 999 pts


All three Engineers are helping out the Cannons, reducing misfires and bolstering them.

So, what are your thoughts on this army?

My WEs wouldn't have any trouble beating this list. My OKs would struggle, but make it nevertheless.

Why? Because they're quick and cannons can only do so much. With the Stank, I could just avoid it and pick it off in my own time.

Keeping that in mind, I would recommend the following changes:
*Combat is inevitable. Some units can comfortably get a Turn Two charge, sometimes giving you one shoot phase to kill everything. I'd say you want at least one R&F unit to do a bit of chopping and swinging.
*Cannons in my mind are too specialist. Drop two, and add a Mortar. This will not only give you 125pts to play with, but it will also make your shooting a little more diverse.
*3 Master Engineers seems a little excessive. It makes my warmachine hunters that much more points-effective. Drop two, take a captain with something (to act as your general, and to do a bit of fighting), and a nice infantry unit or two.
*Your Handgun units are good. Banners and Trumpets are useless on them.

What I would do is have a list looking for like this:

Captain with Sword of Battle (don't ask- this is just a nifty little weapon that can help CRes)
Master Engineer
2 units of Handgunners
25 Spearmen, Detachment of 5 handgunners, and 8 free company
5 Greatswords (expand on this if you have the points)
Cannon
Mortar
Stank

That list should fit pretty comfortably under the 1K limit, though double-check me. This gives you the gunline you're after, plus you can actually do a little more in combat:).

Thanks for the comment AFG, my original thought for this army was battling OK and WoC armies. For the OK, the cannons and the steam tank crunch the big stuff while the Hgunners provide fire-support until they're charged, then they stand and shoot.
Against WoC, I plan to counter their high armour, and play on their long range disadvantages. Only problem, mark of tzeentch.

I agree, a WE army would most likely cream the army, unless by some miracle the steam tank ties up your units. For WEs, I've got an Ulric based army with lots of heavily armoured knights and Luthor Huss.

Your idea is great for rounding out the army, but I tend to prefer using cannons for a mortar's job, unless I'm up against gobbos or Skaven.

I really like it.. the list is reasonably fluffy too, it's what an artillery train would look like, with the steam tank pulling the cannons as the troops march on each side.

Would have been horribly cheesy if it wasn't for the engineers, they're really weak, so it helps to balance out the brutal gunline a bit.

Can someone properly define cheese or cheesy for me please? It seems people use the term to describe powerful armies, and use it as a derogatory term.

Yes, I'm a newb and confused.
