So weigh your opinions in folks. Whats your most cost effective character ? Mine is this
Battle Leader
Frost Blade
Storm Shield
Thunderwolf Mount
Saga of the Hunter

Basically just outflank him and charge the most dangerous squad on the field when you get the chance. I had the points costs written in a notebook but I left it at school so I'm sure on how much this guy costs.

Instead of a named character in the SW codex, I'd rather get 3 Rune Priests.

RP #1 - Murderous Hurricane + Tempest's Wrath
RP #2 - Chooser, Living Lightning + Murderous Hurricane
RP #3 - Chooser, meltabombs, Living Lightning + Jaws

325pts of nastiness and 3 chances to stop any psychic powers within range. In lower point games, I'd probably remove 1 of them.

For my 'nilla marines, I use Kraven Strike (count as Shrike) and infiltrate him with 10 assault terminators + terminator/storm shield Librarian.

I find that a WGBL with just a Frostblade for 95pts works pretty well.

I'm going to be trying out some different builds with wolf lords soon, though all on foot.

I'd have to say that the Blood Angel chaplain character, (I think his name is Lematres) and Chaplain Cassius are two of the most cost effective characters in WH40k. They have all of the advantages of chaplains plus some for a similar number of points.

A BA player should never take a jump pack chaplain, unless he already has Lematres, likewise a 'nilla marine player should never take a walking chap unless he already has Cassius.

For me it'll always be a psyker, be that a librarian or rune priest:

Librarian - Vortex of doom, null zone

100 pts, comes with a force weapon and psychic hood a str 10 template weapon and the ability to make daemons cry.

Runepriest - murderous hurricane, living lightning

100 pts again, again with the force weapon, a 48" bubble of "your powers only work half the time" the ability to pop transports from the other end of the board and the ability to make horde infantry units stop and die.

I honestly don't think anything can beat these guys for cheap nastyness, sure they may kill themselves and aren't v good in combat but you can't have everything.

If you stick him in Terminator Armour w/ Storm Shield, this is basically my default choice for Librarian. I don't like HQs without invulnerable saves, and the armour makes him relentless so he can move and still drop the VoD pie :)

I gotta say for low cost - high flexibility me my old Black Templars Master of Sanctity has always been a favorite of mine with a power fist and terminator honours for 150pts you get WS and BS 5 3 wounds and 5 power weapon or power fist attacks on the charge in addition to all the other benefits of a chaplain and the additional benefits for Black Templars, this guy has taken down carnifexes in his time and stood toe to toe (quite literally) with a squigoth, and would have killed it to if it hadnt been for my perfidious eldar allies knocking the last wound off and taking credit for the kill!

castellan (BT): 120 points
- terminator armor, pair lightning claws

Gives him 6 attacks off the charge (with reroll to hit for most BT armies) and rerolls to wound. Just super killy for low point cost.

For named characters I don't think anything is better then Vulkan.
