WWII Soviet Union Army 1500/1500pts
HQ-(380)
Led by a captin w/a veteran sergeant(65)
-x2 Anti-tank squads w/x2 lascannons x4 missile launchers(210)
x1 fire support squad w/x2 heavy bolters(65)

x1Commisar(40)

Troops-930
x6 Command Section
x12 infantry squads(2 per each c.s.)

Give me some advice/constructive critisism about army. I'm trying to keep it like the WW2 Comunist Soviet Union armies.

I would consider beafing up your HQ command section with a few close combat weapons, a vet. sgt with a banner and at least a power fist for your colonel. I know it sounds like a waste of points when your up against anybody who is better in H-T-H (ie everybody exsept Tau and grots) but it's what I always do and it works for me.
Hold the HQ section back behind your battle line, then as your line takes the enemy charge you can use the superior leadership and banner to stop your boys running off, and then you can counter charge the bad guys. You would be suprised how well this tactic works, and so will your opponent.
Good luck.

i like the sound of a power fist on a human smacking guants and orks etc. on the head, but i wanna keep it in line with the ww2 soviet army and i cant see where the power fist comes in.
The banner sounds good, should i get a few comm-links?
Thank you

Good theme, I always thought that the Imperial Guard codex resembled the Red Army. There is no reason not to have a earthshaker cannon or two and to go with the theme got all 5 commissars. Some mortars would be a fine addition and don't limit yourself to 1500 this is the Imperial Gurad, aye

I have been thinking about your soviet army, and I had an idea. You could use the City fight army list published in chapter aproved. It allows more flexabitlity in your troop choices and it even lets you take urban snipers,
which are very similar to death world snipers. If you have ever seen the Jude Law film Enermy at the Gates you will know why this is a good idea. If you haven't seen it yet then I surgest you should before you do your army. It's awsome and feels very authentic.

I agree with Colonel Killmore's comment above. and besides Lascannons look a lot like WWII anti tank guns. You could do a liitle research into the period and convert them. A little bit of platicard to model a different blast shield and your sorted.

With comm-links, try giving them to flamking units only... and a master vox with a heroic senior in the dead centre. Hopefully, this should give them all Ld9.

If it's WWII, you will probably do some alternate modelling and use a bit of counts as... Autocannons, missile launchers, mortars, flamers and grenade launchers will be perfect.

Heavy bolters, perhaps model them to look more like M60's or something, elongate the barrel with a shoota barrel.

Lascannons, meltaguns and plasmaguns may need some modification, so they don't look so futuristic.

Here is my opinion,

I would NOT use anti tank squads! they draw attention and can be esily destroyed....sorta like a magnet for other bad guys to fire at them. I would spread the BIG guns (lazcannons, missile launchers) out into my regular platoon. THis way you have more and the rest of the 8 or 9 guys can go first if you really need them too! This way the enemy cant target only ONE squad but will have to go through ALL your squads....its up to you.

Also, I dotn think that the IG resemble a WW2 Soviet army with the exception of the Ice Worriors. Those guys are slitting images. I think the IG resemble Germans more than anything. The Steel Legion are pretty much a dead give away and take a look at the new Cadian battle standard.....its a damn Iron Cross in disguise!!!! Also look at the IG Eagle or Falcon....Its the darn Nazi Hawk but redone to be mroe PC! LOL.....But the Commisar idea is right from the communist hand book....oh boy.

I think the developers of the game borrowed ideas from both, but I still find that the IG resemble the Germans more than the Soviets.

The guard are meant to look like a lot of the national armies of near-today. The catachans are kinda like Vietnam Americans. Praetorians are colonial british. Cadians used to be kinda like modern day Americans. Steel legion: Germans. Valhallans: Russians. Tallarns: Arabic.

It is expensive to play an all metal guard army (anybody but Cadians) but if you like the look of the models, and it's what you want to do, go for it.

If you really are going for the Sovietski style load up on the conscripts and use the meat shield to cover the advance of an HQ squad (really beefed up of course) and a pack of orgryns, snipers are fairly Russian too. Also, rename your storm trooper squads (should you ever use them) Spetznaz.

If you use doctrines and want a more WW2 style, I would say ditch the ratlings and use special weapon squads with rifles. Ogryns probably aren't that realistic either. Conscript platoons was a good idea (already mentioned), and Indepenedent Commissars might be pretty cool too.

No seriously, imagine an orgryn wearing a Russian wool hat (Ushanka) and an over tight wool/tanned *****in doing a drunken Russian bear dance across squads of Tau FWs. Even give them beards and curved swords. Of course the commissars wouldn't like this much, ah well, alcohol is good for moral.
