hey all, ive been trying to start up a wood elf army, which is pretty balanced taking all comers (especially a Forest Spirit army and dark elves). This is what im thinking to get (a particularly small army i think):

32 Wood elf glade guard. (ill probably make some of them scouts)
8 glade riders
16 Wood elf dryads.
1 Wood elf lord.
2 Wood elf Spellsingers
1 Wood elf standard bearer
18 Eternal Guard
9 way watchers

As you can see, i try to make the army quite shooty, but whilst maintaining a cc element to it(the eternal guard, dryads and glade riders). Just wondering if these units that im getting are worth it or are they just a waste of points. Im did consider warhawk riders and wardancers - but to my opinion they arent worth it - but you can enlighten me.

That will be a fine army. You should be able to spend most of the game not even in CC so things should work out well for you.

Since you dont know what you want for sure for an rmy, you cant go wrong with buying practically all the basic core units. This way you can try them all out for yourself and see if they fit into your style of play that your looking for

That is a good list but I have some comments. (yah know, 2 cents)

First I would get your total eternal guard up to 20 for a fine block unit, or 19 and add a highborn. I have been playing a lot lately and the glade riders are not for cc. They can't handle anything unless you gang up and win. If they are stuck for the next round, forget it. I would field two units of 5 glade riders or a unid of glade riders and a unit of Wild Riders. Use them together.

The whole key with WE is never get into combat unless you know you will win. There is a tendancy to get hammered if you screw this up. You are a rapier army that requires finess but the reward is great if you win right.

To start, Glade guard should be two units of 10. then a unit of 5 scouts. On top of this, a unit of waywatchers. Use the GG to draw enemys to them down shooting lanes. Use your fast cavalry and scouting units for march block. Shoot as the enemy draws near and hit them with two to three units at a time to break them. If you don't run them down, they will turn back around and just have to get shot again, and again, and again. You need to make that the slowest 24" to cross they have ever faced.

Position yourself so you may unleash all your arrows a turn into one unit hopefully making them flee.

Hope this helps a little.

^ I actually really like that idea... good work! I have used that strategy but the way you put it made it flow so easily. But yea, I would take his advice.

cool thanks. About the glade riders, i personally dont really like them, cause 1) theyre expensive gamewise for what they do, and 2) i dont like painting horses (cause i already had enough of painting them in my 2000pt brettonian army). So unless glade riders are absolute essencial for a wood elf army ill try to restrict the horses i try to paint.

I like to idea of woof elves as i can shoot the enemy to almost nothing, and go into combat against a quarter of the opponents forces, making them muhc more managable. I havent played a game with wood elves yet, so ill take the advice form you guys

But i also have another question...should i bring treekin and/or a treeman in 2000pt games or are those for games for over 3000pts, are they worth their points (and money for that matter)??

hi,

nice list
About the glade riders, they are to fragile (IMHO). the best cav WE have are the wild riders. but Glade riders are not essential, but do take something fasts, because WE is a fast army.

Glade Riders are good for a couple of things: fleeing and getting shot to pieces. For 2 more points a model you can have wild riders. They can't flee but they are a devestating combat unit. I'd swap 'em out for sure. If you do want GRs, then 5 or 6 would be enough.

18 EG is fine. 16 would be enough. They're expensive troops in an expensive army, so I don't know that I'd shoot for 20. Every spare point counts.

How about an eagle? Those are cheap and can accomplish a lot.

so i shldnt take the glade riders and take wild riders instead (which is better 8 glade riders or 5 wild riders)...

id take a eagle but there isnt a model out for it (maybe ill just use the warhawk on the warhwak riders).

I had read that the eagle is supposed to be released this month, but I don't see it on the advanced orders page of the US GW site. I bought a high elf great eagle and will use it until the new ones come out.

^good Idea. I use just tons of glade guard, 2 casters watwatchers (and nobel) and some glade riders and wardancers and I have been doing just fine, so whatever you feel like really will work if you get a decent strategy going.

Personally i didnt find the lore of loren too good. So i dont use casters. How do you equip them and what spells do you think are good becase i would like to field some.

Those two armies play very differently. Chaos is very cool, with lots of permutations for army lists. But Chaos has very little in the way of missile fire, even with the Hell Cannon. Wood Elves need a strong shooting phase to win consistently IMO.

Either would be fun, but I found the Chaos book a bit overwhelming, if not intimidating. Talk about special rules, yikes! The Wood Elf models are great, and we know the army book won't be revised for a long time. I'd hate to start Chaos and find that they were next for revamping, just after Dwarfs, O&G, and VC.

Both army lists are expensive when it comes to selecting troops, so I guess that's one similiarity.

Anyhow, just some rambling observations.

well my decision is split between chaos and wood elves, ill just list why its a difficult decision for me:

WOOD ELVES:
why i like them:
*Cool Waywatcher, eternal guard and scout models
*love to shoot the hell out of armies before they reach my battleline
*love the dryad rules (fear causing skirmishers :O )
*relatively elite troops
*uses quality rather than quantity to beat the opposition

Why i might not like them:
*their men look like girls
*ive never seen wardancers win combat
*glade riders are pretty weak IMO as calvalry (but then theres wild riders)
*its going to be a pain painting all those flesh (im not used to painting flesh as i play 40k as well)
*quite a large number of glade guard to paint

HORDES OF CHAOS:
Why i like them:
*Chaos warriors and knights - yes please (and the models look cool)
*theyre so diverse with all those marks
*elite troops - might be outnumbered but if i pull a victory it feels better
*dont have to paint too many models and no flesh
*daemons?-yes please
*quality rather than quantity

Why i might not like them:
*Marauders might be good, but their models suck (so i wont be using them)
*i will find myself outnumbered 4:1 or more (maybe too elite?)
*lack of shooting-even the hellcannon isnt reliable
*limited number of units to pick from (as im planning to make a warrior-and-knight-ONLY army)
* i might lose quite often

as you can see id like a elite smallish army, that looks good when painted (with relatively small effort), but will also perform well in games....its a hard decision.

I don't see the girly aspect of the models, except for the female models, but that's just IMO. Wardancers are fantastic. If someone you know isn't winning with them, then he's playing them wrong. I've been so impressed with them, I just finished painting two units of seven each. They have been a consistent performer for me in a big way.

Glade Riders are weak and are only good for fleeing. I don't like them at all. Wild Riders on the other hand kick butt. They're a second favorite unit, right behind wardancers.

Glade Guard are the easiest models to paint in the range, with the exception maybe of dryads. It's the waywatchers and other models that will take so long.

I give them each two powerstones and I like to take tree singing, furry of the forest, and twlight host...I mean it makes dryads cause terror... also the one that gives regeneration so yeah they work great for me. give 'em a go.
