Incoming! Battle Missions

Coming in March, Battle Missions is a brand-new supplement for Warhammer 40,000 that expands on the basic missions found in the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook. Each of the thirty-something scenarios detailed in Battle Missions has been designed to allow you to fight the sort of battles normally the subject of Black Library novels. From daring raids and assassinations, to breakthroughs and last stands, Battle Missions will allow your army to play in a way that reflects its background. No matter what Warhammer 40,000 army you collect this exciting new supplement will open up a whole new gaming experience.

Of course it just wouldn't be the same if there weren't some great new miniatures to fight through these missions with. Fortunately, there will be new sets for Space Marines, Orks and the Imperial Guard released alongside Battle Missions in March.

Enjoy!

Yeah I just got this as well.

Looks awsome,

I only hope they include fluff reaasons for each race to do some of the missions. Ie Tyranids.

Otherwise, hooray more missions.

Although, what ork models are left to be made, Nob Bikers?(Then again easy conversion anyway) Plastic meganobz!?! God I hope so.

Flash gits maybe? Possibly a new vehicle (looted wagon?). Guard. I guess, will be more tanks, hopefully some artillery. Maybe penal legions. Maybe expansions on metal model ranges like vostroyans/valhallans etc.

Space marines leaves me puzzled though, what is there still to do in their codex? Do they have all their special characters yet?

More likely you'll see new models for using the supplement, like the scenery that came out with Cities of Death, or the bastions and other defensive systems that came out with Planetstrike.

Maybe they'll have some sort of series of "objective markers" or "wounded officers" or stuff like that.

This sounds like the book JJ was talking about at Conflict:Scotland.
It was (and may still be) his pet project, and he was very enthusiastic about it.
As I recall, The plan was to have race specific missions, 3 missions per race, for a total of 30.
When rolling up a game, player 1 has 1,2,3. player two has 4,5,6. then you roll for the mission.
Things like "Beachhead" or "Surgical Strike" for Marines, or "Slave Raid" for DE.
As I recall, every mission was an objective mission of some sort.
The victory conditions were themed to the mission.

Hmm... could it be that GW has finally come up with a supplement I'll want to buy?

Naaaaah... couldn't be. This is GW, after all.

So they put a few generic missions in the rulebook, missions that are simple and enjoyable but not anything special.

They had tons of nice fun special missions on their website and popping up in WDs for their loyal fans, now what?

WD is now just a gaming catalogue with the new army gathering hype by winning a battle against an incompetant player with a weak list.

They removed most of the quality articles from their website and discontinued black gobbo a number of years ago. They have their daily advertisement article but that's far from quality.

So where did all of their good idaes go? Their narrative missions? New things to try? Oh they're over there, on a shelf for $30.

Thanks GW

i'm pretty new to the hobby (2 years now) but I have to disagree slightly Kevin, at least about the WD and website comments. I don't know what they removed that was there in the past, but I actually like many articles in recent WD's and I love the masterclasses that they do now. I don't care about battle reports casue I only do the hobby part of GW, so I guess that makes me automatically a bit more leanient. It's true, there are too many ads in there and meaningless 2-page pictures with prices but somehow I still get happy when the new issue arrives and I actually enjoy reading many articles.

Also, the website has a lot of cool articles, they're usually painting/modelling (which is good for me) but I've seen many extra ones like campaigns, tacticas etc. I don't know about the gaming aspect of the expansions, but the models that came with them are fenomenal and the expansions sound good gaming-wise also, but I won't comment on something I haven't played.

The new book also sounds cool.

Either way, everyone has their own opinion so cheers.

A new book sounds pretty cool. The more missions the better, especially since there are so many extra things in expansions like planetstrike that the purity of army vs. army can get lost in all the firestorms and bastion breaking.

That isn't to say that missions need to be super straight forward, kill 'em all affairs, but its nice when the difference maker in a mission isn't that guy rolling a bunch of lucky rolls on the firestorm chart and wiping out half your army/ defenses from the get-go.

Also, new models could mean anything, though hopefully by "Space Marines" they mean "Space Wolves" and by "models" they mean "thunderwolves that aren't Canis and cost less than $41 per wolf." Though probably not.

I agree that the new book looks cool but I'm also confused as to what the new models will be for the ranges specified as all of them are pretty well supported, and I'm pretty sure the marines have an entirely plastic range with a couple of metal figs/upgrades.

With Guard I've just gone through the codex and they only models that don't have (decent) GW figs are
-Rough Riders (crappy 2nd ed Mongolian cav)
-the artillery other than the (EVIL) basilisk - so griffon, colossus medusa and death strike and also the hydra (all of which are covered by ForgeWorld)
-Leman Russ Vanquisher, Eradicator and Exterminator.
-Bastonne and Pask (both characters easily made by kit bashing and a bit of creativity)
-Penal legions (again easily converted by kit bashing to which ever theme you fancy)
-Psyker battle squad as a whole (metal sanctioned pskyers but no 'Overlord')

Out of that list I would love to see the artillery pieces in a kit like the new demolisher, with the hydra included, even though I have a Hydra made of aegis def line + chimera.

Could be more Gaunt's Ghost models maybe as they are one of the most Black Library supported guard armies?

This reminds me of the unique scenarios from the old third edition codices for some races, can't remember if they were any good though, no one ever used them.

I'm looking forwards to this new book, should make things more varied and for interesting campaign material.

Hopefully they'll finally retire those hideous old Ork wartrakks and buggies and give the Guard some more vehicle kits, would love to have an Eradicator without needing to get the cannon bit off a Baneblade kit too. :soldier: Or failing that, do the unthinkable, divide by zero and give the Dark Eldar something new.

Heh, reminds me of when they'd just put race specific mission scenarios in the race specific Codex. Or have them on their website, or even white dwarf. There's even notes on how to generate a race specific board in the Necron codex, something which I didn't notice in the new Wolves codex (or have just got a blindspot for at the moment, could have been nice to have some suggestions for ice world special terrain).

So far it doesn't seem like anything that an imaginative player couldn't come up with by themselves, heck with a little inspiration from fluff and a few back issues of white dwarf I can quite easily imagine at least 3 different assassination scenarios, 2 different recon scenarios, 2 kinds of bunker assault and a kind of escort/pursuit mission for mech armies.

Of course, those are not necessarily as convenient as having some (hopefully) playtested rules that are in a big book that your game group is (hopefully) familiar with. I'll put away my cynicism and keep an optimistic eye on it, it'll hopefully be more creative than anything I can imagine in a few moments.

Brilliant. Ill get it. No doubt the Chaos missions will be useless but still itll make for interesting gaming.

Nice to see theres new minatures coming-not nice to see that they are for Orks/Marines/IG.
Where most of the medel range are out already unless they release themed models for the expansion.

Honestly I like the Book releases that they do for supplement material. The White Dwarfs weren't free. Instead of waiting for a new white dwarf to come out the may have had one fun scenario or new way to play an army we just buy a significantly larger amount of material in a cheaper package. Instead of $75, you pay $30.

White Dwarfs do need to get back to what they were though. What happened to Chapter Approved?

now i'm not saying that marines *must have* or specifically *need* these models because they're too hard to convert for the majority of players, but, they still need models for;
- Honour Guard squads
- Master of the Forge w/conversion-beamer
- sternguard w/special and/or heavy weapons (mainly the heavy flamer & combi-flamer options since those are definate DIY models)
- re-cut razorback sprue since only 2 of 5 options comes in the box!

and most of all, i'd be thrilled to see a plastic venerable dread since the metal is an absolute nightmare to try and build!!! (little timmy is neve rbuilding that one without a parent/gw staffer's help!)
honestly, when i need to pin almost every single join of a model and spend half a day green stuffing up the massive gaps, you know the model makers failed epically at crafting the model!

as for the orks, i totally agree that they seriously need new war buggies/trak models! the old ones are so hideous it isn't even funny anymore... perhaps a plastic box that makes a single buggie/trak and comes with the option for a twin-linked shoota, rokkit launcha, skorcha?
also, i wouldn't mind seeing a basic kit for building looted wagons either, though i'd much rather see flash gitz get models before the wagon... (wagons are dead simple to convert - even for little timmy!)

guard definately need new rough rider models since the current ones are god-awful fugly! also, a re-cut of the leman russ sprue to give it the new track assembly as the demolisher + include the option for the eradicator & exterminator... any idiot who's older than 12 can easily convert a vanquisher! IMHO it really doesn't need a model since the only thing you have to do is add a bit of plastic tubing to lengthen the barrel!
if they don't do a new russ kit, then i'd hope for a redone basilisk sprue which includes the griffon & collosus cannons...

cheers!
