Ok so I'm very new here. In fact, only joined yesterday! So here I am...
Call me Angel please, or my username, I'd be much obliged ^^

So, I'm planning on starting Witch Hunters. My brother has Space Marines Blood Angels so hopefully he's willing to teach me the very basics. Still, I'm not quite getting the whole thing really. The Amour/weapon skill points and so on...

And for those who are interested, I'm collecting the Order of Our Martyred Lady as my Battle Sisters

Welcome.

When making an army you shouldask weather you want a mobile or solid line march army:

Mobile:
-This army would comprise of many transports, tanks and jump pack infantry (Seraphim)
-It offers you fast response times and ability to engage the enemy on your own terms as you would most likely strike first most of the time minimising your own casulties in return fire.
-Rhinos and battle sisters squads equiped with three flamer type weapons is a common theme to take, combine this with the "Divine Guidance" act of faith.

Foot Slogging
-Lots of infantry walking up the feild really.
-Slower than mobile but you have more troops as you don't spend points on transports.
-This type of army is best adapted if you actually do place some fast units in there (seraphim)
-Very well rounded force offering you a mixture of units to face different aspects of what you might come against during battle. This is probably the best army type suited to begginers.

Normally the best way to go is just to buy a Hq choice and two troops choice. Depending on what you want this can go two ways for this army. You can go for an inquisitor and two storm trooper squads (Inquisitional army) or a cannoness and two battle sister squads (Pure Adapte Sororitias Army). You could just use a mix and match of both of course :)

As far as inquisitors go they arn't as effective as the cannoness when comparing their ability in battle and the points you paid for them, so most people lean more towards a cannoness.

Hmmm Im sure you'll beable to work out how the army works and fit it to your own preferances in time, above is just some advice on how to start so you don't have to take it if you don't wanna :)

welcome to the us small minority of 40k players who play as the witch hunters.

of course start with the HQ and 2 troops first. Your best bet is the canoness. a very good looking model and mandatory for your army. (inquisitor lords suck!)
When you get a chance, get a jump pack for her from the GW store or buy a seraphim and use that.

FOr troops, 2 boxes of battle sisters is fine. At this point is when you need to decide what style army you want to play as mentioned earlier. Once you have decided this we can help you out in detail.

an inquisitor can be alot better than a canoness as they have alot more options and are much more flexible (don't forget they have the same stats but they also have that sp rule where they can choose to pass or fail any ld test) and you do need one to take assasins and orbital strikes, i recommend you keep things simple however as you are just starting out perhaps a small all sister army until you find your 40k feet.

ohh an also cool name, pic and location :w00t:

ohh and i prefer to think of us as an elite section of 40k rather than a minority.

i would definetly not consider the =][= lord a better deal for a number of reasons...

1.) with the large retinue you'll get your squad whiddled down really quick.
2.) no additional faith points.
3.) no blessed weapon, meaning the only viable option is the eviscerator if your fighting psykers power stake.
4.) Flexible yes, but the whole HQ with retinue eats up an enormous amount of points.

Now, the normal elite inquisitors i like better, as they are much better deal then a palatine. still, i rarely use mine, only when i want to use my eversor!

I'll be stickin with my canoness ;)

Thanx. I ADORE odd quirky things like that. And Angel_of_Death comes from the larger Codex/Rule Book thing. There is a page in there about Space Marines being the Angels of death or something...AND The pic is just something I altered...Saint Celestine.

________________________________________________________

So...I'm thinking mobile army, or like you siad, a small all sisters army, Just to start. I can't wait till I paint them (Y) Cheers all!

And yes, we are the elite! Personally, I think Space Marines are over played, especially the Ultramarines. But that's just me

Well they are a good starters army, especially for the younger ones new to 40K. I started as an Ultramines player when i was 10 and thought it was great. They're relatively easy to paint and are good to start to learn how the rules work. But yes they are overplayed to an extent.

depends the retinue done right can be the hardest thing to kill in the army mines around 200 points at the moment and is ded ard, it works out cheaper than a celestian bodyguard with the canoness, no faith points true but fluff and power wise they are soo much better than a canoness that it dosn't matter + in a 1000+ match i usally have around 12 faith points and you don't need em all. lastly the models basic look sooo cool and thats before you modify them, you can literally use almost any models you want for em (i once took one from planet stunty that was made up of fantasy dwarfs)

damn right , DEATH TO THE SMURFS

judging by things ya sound like ya will make a grand =][= so jus remembor the three rule,

1, power armour does not make up for t3 so play tactically
2, flame is your friend use it excesivly and ued be surprised how long your battle line holds up
3, and finally if it aint burning it aint dead :w00t:

Because a universally cost effective Inquisitorial squad simply does not exist.
That's called "a Marine".

Any Squad has the chance to excel if it enters a situation where its talents are fully appreciated. But the Inqusitorial squad (regardless of how you tool it) will have a devil of a time reacting to an uncontrolable variety of situations.

However, one good perspective is to realize that the Inquisitor and his hemchmen do severla things that Faith can never do. There are some armies, (orks, for example) that I find I really don't much faith against. So try to identify the "faith immune" armies, and then take a chance with the Inquisitor and henchmen when facing them.

As to our newbie, the best advice is to get some experience logged in as fast as possibe.
Wether it comes in the form of hanging out at your local shop watching games and asking questions, or stumbling your way through games and bringing your questions back to us.
Whatever it takes, get as much experience as possible as soon as possible.

My nearest shop is a bit awful really.....but I know one thats SO nice. The guy behind the counter was having a good chat with me about why I picked Witch Hunters and that they were a good army so don't underestimate...
So yes, I shall question you all to within an inch of your lives! BWAAHAHAHAHAHA!

Guys, lets not subvert the poor chaps thread and confuse the hell out of him before he starts!

Angel Welcome to the elite minority!

As people have said, for your core army, you need a HQ and 2 troops, this is a cannones and 2 sister squads in its simplest form. from there there are 3 ways to go:

1. look at the lists in the Witch hunters army list forum - there are all sorts scattered with threads on do this and sont do that, but you will get the picture, also the battle reports forum may help you see how armies work

2. buy somethign and try it out - Not a bad approach at all

3. Ask a forum like this what to do - possibly the worse option cos we all got opinions and they aint all the same so you are likely to get conflicting advice. Generally regular posters (eg Plague, Gen, heironimo and Zinfandel) can give you good neutral advice but even they can fall into bickering when it comes to touchy subjects like inquisitors, repentia and how to set up your serephim.

Probably your best solution is discuss with your brother how many points you will fight with commonly, then try and sort out an army on paper and post it, that should start getting you decent advice, dont accept "do this and dont do that", demand "why" and you will be able to judge better how good advice is (Why? because games players are an opinionated bunch)

It would also be an advantage, since you are going to be playing your brothers Blood angels mostly, if you can also list what he has, and if you get chance axidentally drop a bowling ball on any Baal class predetors he owns

Finally my 2p on the inquisitor question:

I dfont like =][=s, I dont think they suck, but they are far more specialised and give less to the amry than a cannoness, the elite choice may be of use to eat up odd points, but otherwise, unless I am dealing with a known army and I have something special in mind (read I need a psychic hood for example) I will leave them at home

well said. Welcome and first off, play the style of army that appeals to you. There is no sense in playing a style or options you don't like. Have some fun.

all stuff aside it is good to see a girl playing 40k it's become increasingly rare these days.....

 i didn't know you cared

seriously i'm surprised you included me in that to memory the only thing i think we've ever agreed upon was a flamer was better than a storm bolter. :w00t:

Well yeah, but I tend to have that effect on people. And I'm glad I'm playing 40k. I'm in it for the fidly painting, thats what drew me to WH and the Sisters (Or Nuns with Guns as I've rather affectionatly nicknamed them...). Also, I wanted a change from all the Space Marines that have invaded my house...I'm being blinded by red and gold paints.
