Hi there folks, I finally caved into several years of curiosity and went E-Bay crazy.

I purchased a bunch of space marine stuff including 3x10 man tactical squads, a 5 man terminator squad, 5 man assault squad, Rhino, Land raider and razor back.

now with this stuff enroute I assembled the first arriving tac squad and then realized I had no clue what sort of army list I was going for, or for that matter even what chapter.

I have many questions but I'll start with just a few.

What are the rules for color schemes? can I use the Ultramarines rules and paint up my army in any color I want?

Can a tac marine carry a bolt pistol and a missle launcher/Flamer? or are they limited to just the larger weapons?

I want a flexible army that has the ability to go hth if necessary, but also with a reasonable ranged punch to reduce numbers before closing, does anyone have some example lists/equipment choices that might help me?

what else do I need to buy?

Welcome to Lo hope you have a good time here.

One question do you have the space marine codex? If not GET IT. Also GET the RULEBOOK.

You can paint your guys any colour (just don't hurt the eyes) most people perfer at least 3 colours a guy.

Okay an individual guy can only every fire one weapon. If you look at the codex I think you'll understand. A standard space marine can only have a bolter. A sergeant may trade his bolter for a close combat weapon and bolt pistol.

So that means the big carbines that look like machine guns.

There are no rules for ultramarines.

For a flexible army a standard space army codex will do. You won't need another codex for a chapter.

Get another 6 man tactical squad and put them in the razor back.

For good close combat for all squads get a vet. sergeant with a power weapon.

After that you can pretty much get anything else your heart disariers.

Well, my first post!

My advice is to go to your GW store and ask for a couple of intro games, like I did today. Don't be too dishearted if the dice are against you from the start. They have been specially bonded with Chaos Daemons so that you lose. I swear they have something against me in particular..

Thanks for the clarification on sidearms, I have browsed through the codex for several chapters and the space marine one as well as the rule book, but due to excessive homework and work, haven't had the time to really look at it much.
a few more questions:

Is it possible to buy sprues of power weapons and accessories? or if I'm creative can I craft my own?

general thoughts on tac squads: is it better to equip all bolters except for the sargent? or is it best to take advantage of the flamer and launcher provided with the box?

Personally I would split the 10 men into 5, and give each squad either the launcher or the flamer.

And yeah, you should be able to buy individual sprues from the GW Catalogue if I remember correctly. It should be out in two or three weeks time, so the guy at my local GW said. Co-incidentally, his name is Bob too. :a

My middle name is Bob, or it could be reduced to such.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to grant me the same knowledge that other Bobs have. This however makes me greatful for the advice provided by Bobs or otherwise.

Terminators: Thunderhammer/Stormshield and lightning claws or heavy weapons and powerfists.

HQ suggestions?

As for sprues, yeah you should be able to buy them. You should in fact be able to mail order them from the Stores...you know that little Mail order area in all the GW shops.

Yo how ya doin, choose a chapter you really like, if you want a good mix between HTH and shooting then maybe Blood Angels would be the group for you. Colour scheme is up to u. just make good fluff to support the different colour

And were are my manners.

alright, I finally decided to go with the Black Templar Codex, all the posts on the bored made them sound like fun!

now to convert all these marines to have swords :)

NOOOOOOOOO, convert to space wolves, easy to paint, excellent playing.
But if you must play another, make up your own color scheme and then you can decide the chapter. Just say what company it is and the commander.
You may not take a pistol and a heavy weapon. Heavy weapon guys can have grenades and a close combat weapon. Space Wolves may carry a bolter and a close an axe, sword that gives +1 attack. Every other chapter may carry a close combat weapon and bolter, but you don't get an extra attack.

heh my reason for not picking the wolves: Too many chapter specific models=hard on the wallet when you already have a bunch of stuff ;)
