In 3rd edition, Chaos never had the option of Command Squad. We could take a retinue of chosen, which could be further upgraded to terminators. I think this is what you mean. However, a retinue + a lord was rather expensive, and there was nearly always a better way of using the points.

Our HQs are selfish. Speaking strictly of the game (not fluff, which admittedly I know very little), our HQs aren't too attached to their marines, and will go off on their own or use a squad of raptors as a means to fill their ends. Princes often completely ignore their infantry support and rely on the cover of advancing tanks to facilitate their rush into c.c.. Overall, the loss of retinues is a small thing, though fluffwise, it was a nice option.

I think the answer is because most people would just rather make a "command squad" for their Lord out of another unit, such as normal marines or termies. There just wasn't a need for an entire army option based around a bodyguard unit.

Well, we can't do it anymore because it's quite possible that the Lord won't Deep Strike with his 'retinue'. Which is dumb to say the least.

It's a real pity that we lost the retinues.
With the new termies, a combined deepstrike with both the lord and the retinue could be a real game winner. Now there's just no reason to use the termie-lord now, as he's deepstriking on his own, which is rather risky.

Let's wait for the coming 5'th edition. Their new vehicle damage chart might make it viable to use Land raiders again. Putting a Lord and some termies inside a LR which is almost impervious to harm and that Possessed on top of that... I can just say WOW.
The new rules say (this is only rumours now) that theres only one damage chart. If the weapons Strength+roll equals the armour value of the vehicle it cant be destroyed, possibly not even immobilised. Add Possessed to that and the Raider will just keep on coming. Combined with some P-fist+combimelta termie champs with a stick of corn, a Daemon weapon toting Lord of Undecided in termie armour can tear up anything.

Yes, our HQs selfish, even in fluff, but doesn't that mean you WANT a bodyguard to
stop the interference of others? Delegating tasks to those who have to prove themselves
and to weed out the weak, a bodyguard is an HQs best protection.

But yeah, a Daemon Prince probably cares little for his still mortal brothers-in-arms.

I kinda miss the bodyguard option.

I liked the old Chosen. The option of upgrading them to aspiring champions and then further to termies was great. If we only had that option now.
I would like to have the option of fielding both termies and chosen separately, and still be able to have a dedicated unit of bodyguards for my lord.
Let's face it. The only way to get your hands on a terminator armour is to kill the guy wearing it (or scavenging it from the battlefield, but then a stronger dude would kill you for it). So the terminators are definately some hardcore MFs. This should show on their statline. They should be Aspiring Champions to start with, and then have +1 Attack for the armour.
Rules wise this could be represented like this:

**

Any number of Chosen may be upgraded to Aspiring Champions for an additional cost of 10 pts, granting them +1 Attack in their profile.
Any number of Aspiring Champions may be given Terminator Armour for an additional cost of +17(?) pts, further giving them +1 Attack in their profile.

Up to 4 Chosen may buy special weapons.
Once they are upgraded to Aspiring Champions they can only buy specialised close combat weapons, and as such can't be given special ranged weapons.
Chosen Aspiring Champions may use the ordinary Terminator weapon options.

The Chosen from the Elites section would be like they are now, as well as the Terminators, but with the change that only one can e upgraded to Aspirin Champion (the one which keeps the lot together).

**

This would promote the use of real expensive hardcore Terminators. If you don't want to spend those points you can always buy the standard Termies from the Elites section, but they're not as good and can't be used in a joint deepstrike with the Terminator Lord, and doesnt get the option of a dedicated Land Raider transport.
