As a general rule, 'Nids field lots of small, thinly armoured critters, so you require lots of mid-to-low strength weapons with a decent rate of fire - regular bolters, storm bolters, heavy bolters, assault cannons, autocannons, and so on. Blast weapons are handy, and flamers can make all the difference when things get right up close and personal.

Generally speaking there's little in a tyranid list that needs Lascannons and such to deal with it - Carnifexes, Hive Tyrants and other huge bugs are pretty much it. Snipers are great for the job, too - they don't care about the target's toughness when they wound, and now that they have Rending, they have the potential to blast through their saves instead of just relying on them failing a few if they're forced to take enough.

And avoid the fancy, expensive stuff if possible... Consider this: 10 Termies are great, but when 200 Gaunts come seething over a hilltop intent on devouring you whole, 40 Marines with plain old Bolters will serve you much better for around the same cost. One exception? Land Raiders. Tyranids have always struggled with anti-tank work, and under the 5th edition rules they're having an even tougher time of it. If you think you can afford the points, a LR Crusader can wreak havoc on anything in a 'Nid list with minimal fear for its own safety.
