If you want a dark, dirtier gold, undercoat brown. If you want a shiny, clean gold, then undercoat yellow. Also, mixing with silver sounds good. And yes, the gold does seem extremely thin. I consider it yellow aluminum flakes in water, basically. The good part is that if you want some things to have a gold tint, then you can thin it down even more and paint it over.
