Plasma - is it worth it?

I've seen a lot of peopole recommending plasma weaponry here. Thing is that 'Gets Hot!' seems awfully dangerous, you have a 1 in 6 chance of blowing yourself up, 1 in 3 if your rapid firing with a PP or PG. So is the gain really worth the risk?

Gets hot wounds don't deny you an armour save..

Hence, on marines, they're actually quite reliable. When firing at 24", the chance of meltdown is only about 1/20. Rapid firing, it's about 1/10 per shot fired.
Yes, Yes, Yes.

Since most of the 40k are MEQ armies, Plasma is very worth it both points and tactically. Anything that can deny a Terminator an armour save or krack a transport for such low point cost is worth it. I play IG/DH and I always give my Stormies Plasma with a 4+ save.

Cheers, DH
Absoloutly thier worth it.

At range, 1 Shot Plasma Cannon or Gun from a Tactical Marine gives you a 1/18 chance of killing yourself, once every three games if statistical averages work. Remember you get a save against gets hot.

In the same time that you kill yourself, 18 plasma shots will most likely kill 6 or 7 Terminators! great deal.

Rapid firing is dangerous. Rapid firing 18 times as opposed to 1 shot will kill you 4 times. So its riskier but that would also kill twice as many Terminators/whatever your shooting at.

Plasma Cannon are godly. Stop anyone deepstriking in your LoS and if thier coming out of a transport/are a transport then BOOM.

Totally agreed.

I always have two marine squads one with the Las-plas combo (Lascannon, meltagun), and the other with the Plas-Plas combo (Plasma cannon, plasma gun). Sure they have died a couple times from overheat. But I guarantee you that they have killed alot more!

HPA
lol I just played against SM with my SMs and he had two devestator squads (one with all PC,and the other with all LC)

Those plasma cannonsx4 basically kill 3-4 marines a shot per turn. Thats around 45-60 points of dead units in one turn from each cannon. Sure one might die to overheat...you still get a save...but the cannon is going to get its points cost back easily.
Plasma guns are worth taking, definately. Plasma cannons, on the other hand are too expensive points-wise. The small blast template will only get 1 or 2 marines under it if your opponent is smart enough to spread his men out. You would be much better off taking 2 plasma guns in a tac squad if you use the trait that allows you to replace a lascannon with a 2nd special weapon.
Plasma Cannon are still worth it. Deterring Deep Strike, owning people who bail out of penetrated transports. Close order drill IG. Forcing the enemy to spread out and therefore hit you with less in close combat. Its all good.

Shooting necrons who get out of the Monolith.

I wouldnt recomend a Dev squad with them though, just a couple in Tactical squads.
Looking at the stats, I would say plasma are cool. Unfortuinately, if you're like me and have a blind spot wher it comes to rolling dice well, don't go overboard. But they're still good against powere armoured nasties of all shapes and sizes.
the statistics are in my favour, my plasma gunners have only had one casualty (ever) SO YAY FOR PLASMA!!!
I have Cleanse and Purify for my trait, and I have 2 squads with 2 plasmaguns in them. So yeah, I'd say they are worth it. I won't say they've NEVER failed me (don't want to bring down the wrath of the Emperor's holy dice!) but they usually do their job very well.
Plasma is pretty unfluffy though. I mean come on - the emperors finest - worth 100 normal men each, and they have a 1/9 chance of getting fried by their own gun (using it to full effect). Surely the adeptus mechanicus can do better!

I personally don't use plasma for the get hot reason. I can see that you will more than likely do a lot more damage to your enemy that you will to yourself but all too often just one more casualty can stop a unit being a scoring unit. Also I really find the fluff reason too much for me to take.

Emperors finest indeed!
I'd say that plasma is VERY fluffy. Much of the technology has been lost, is barely working, and when it does work, isn't understood. It's no wonder that every now and again, a plasmagun goes boom.
I have always run at least five plasma weapons, and currently run 4 PCs and 2PGs. I average one meltdown per game (usually a [email protected]%#&^$ PC, which makes that squad a maneuver element instead of a fire support element). Worth it? Absolutely! Ask me about the time that 750 points worth of Ksons AC Termies deepstruck in front of my three PCs (and 2 PGs...and about 20 bolters, and a PP):hump:
