when I get some green stuff I have a plan-

I plan to get 5 normal cadian shock troops and use them as my command squad

and use green stuff to sculpt samurai armor and helmets on to them i'll keep the guns however as these are sc-fi wh40k samurai

I had this kinda idea for my tau but I never got round to doing it and people started moaning because I was going to give them katanas but this time i'll stick with the whole guard/tau not being that great in close combat.

the reason I want to do this is mainly because I have always found samurai , ninjas, and japanese buildings and things interesting and pretty cool

any other ideas for some conversions on other IG units

and I'd prefer no its been done before posts because I know it probably has

EDIT_

Concept pics- (done in paint so not that great but still)

sorry bout the tiny pic but its late so i'll try to fix it in the morning

You might be able to use some of the Shadow of the East minatures to help you mod them.
the scales too different I thought of that

wh40k scale - 28mm

Lotr scale- 10mm

^^ pics fixed
Yes indeed... It looks cool! Great idea to spice up ye old command squad... Should make them vets on the army roster, or it would just be plain odd...:ninja:

Very good concept sketch you made there, although I think the head ornement are a bit off, but maybe if you 'cover' most of the face with a loose pice of cloth...
Good luck chap, and please post some pictures when you do the conversion!

thanks , it might take me a while to get the green stuff and models but when I do you will receive pics keep the ideas coming

although I think the head ornement are a bit off- thats just my bad " microsoft paint" skills it'll look better in real life
I would advise doing some research on Japanese fuedal armor, and perhaps consider different kinds of Japanese wear. :p I mean, they have armor, but dress robes as well. It's really the kind of effect yeah? And I would advise using grunt armor for grunts. :p
Indeed, make sure you do some research.. Japanese armour follows a very coherent style. You can bend a bit, but if you stray too far from that format, it will look wierd.

Are you going to add some swords.. There is an article somewhere in which someone converted a model with a Japanese style sword using the most unlikely bits. I think it was in black gobbo, and was about skaven.

I think, if you could pull it off, it would look awesome. Kind of 17th century arquebussier style, but if you got it wrong it could look downright wierd. ;)
how easy would it be to make a green stuff katana?

i'll just get started on my research now

my concept drawing was based off a pic on google image search

Edit- heres a basic coloured in drawing

you could encorporate yhe samuri sord into your models either by fixing samuri daggers as bayonets or have them holding a sowrd with there lasguns strapped to there back. i really hope you follow up on this idea of samuri caurds men although i dont know if the imperial gaurd have enough honour to make this possible (he he he) good luck anyway
yeh i'm planning on making very simple conversions for my guardsmen not sure what though

kinda feudal japanese basic soldier uniforms any ideas?
For the infantry, I'm thinking those farmer hat style helms and breastplates modelled in the right style. Vet squads, I'm thinking you model them after martial artists and ronin, like the Shinsengumi or even Ryu. :p

Hell, maybe just the helm if you are using the Cadian. Just use matching colors for the hat and the armor, Commisionars get your basic samurai armor without any ornamentation sorta like captains \, perhaps, Psykers get miko or Onmyōji or itako costumes, while I'm thinking Japanese warrior monk or tengu outfits for the priests. Ogryns would work great with monk outfits as well, especially if you include those bamboo helmets with slits they used to wear. Another idea for ogryns would be as oni, which wouldn't be too much of a conversion. Just some horns and stuff. Red skin. so on and so forth. I would make ratlings look like little beggars, really or you could base them off tanuki or kappas. Rough riders can be referenced to Japanese calvary.

Command squads obviously get armor based for generals and shoguns, with as much ornamentation as possible. You might want to include those scary masks they wear.

Sentinels, vehicles etc, just look to anime. There's plenty of Japanese style robots and vehicles around, so you can use them to seem more oriental.

If you decide on assasins (Dunno if you can use them though), you can have them as ninjas. :p

Well.. you could model them after Ashigaru (professional light infantry of the Japanese feudal era.) I can't find any images I find trustworthy, they tend to distort things a bit (often by giving them swords, which is a no no.) In fact, amusingly enough, the images I'm most inclined to trust are from Shogun: Total War..

http://guidesarchive.ign.com/guides/8631/units.html

Those helmets would be very easily modelled.

As for samurai swords.. I've found the article I was looking for, and it requires a lot of skaven bits.. So here's my kit bashed alternative.

Get any knives and swords you can find together.

Remove the blade and the hand guard bit, leaving just the pomel.

Make a new hand guard by cutting a very small square of circle of plasticard (either is acceptable.) Attach it to the pommel

Since they're going to be sheathed, you don't need a blade. The scabbard should be slightly curved and cylindrical.. I'd probably end up doing it in green stuff to get the shape, but I'm sure there are parts you can use. Green stuff might take some time to get the right shape on.

For the samurai look, fasten it at the waist (you should really have two, but never mind!) so that the blade would be facing upwards.

thanks those are some good ideas and pics

although I still don't understand how to make the tanks fit in with my men as they didn't have tanks back then and wwII japanese tanks are nothing special.

How could I make them look like "anime" vehicles without making them look like tau vehicles
Don't try to make swords out of Greenstuff. It is far to soft for this. I made some lightningclaws and they are...rubber-ish:)
I like the idea though and it will work nice with your building.
thanks, ok i'll take your advice

Well.. my advice would be to leave the tanks as they are, but give them a 'samurai'-ish theme.

You could add a Sashimono to each vehicle (basically, a large flag or icon on the back with a single clear heraldric symbol, would look great on sentinels!) to give it some unique heraldry and identification. Then just have a samurai guardsmen driving them.. The vehicles could merely be a replacement for horses.

Avoid slipping into 'generic asian' mode.. Keep the style clean and focused. You have a very cool idea on your hands.
A simple addition like, a Japanese temple roof for example. I'm not saying a Japanese anime tank. I'm saying a tank with Japanese fuedal ornamentation. Refer to Japanese temples and stuff for ideas. Sentinels are easy. Just make them walking robot-samurai. Gundam has great examples. Give a sentinel a samurai helmet and the shoulder things, give it a matching color scheme, so on and so forth.
yeh thats what I was thinking

sentinels , Sashimono
hellhounds/chimeras dragon template (when I spray I will leave a section shaped lke a dragon and then fill it in with blue or gold paint)

Lemans , i'm still thinking of ideas

i'll post some more concept pics soon ;)
how easy would it be to make a green stuff katana?

don't! if you want to create a katana from scratch, then get some sprue a d start filing so that it is flat on both sides (or you could just heat it up so it's soft then stick in in a vice and squeeze, this works:yes: ).

then using a technical/very sharp pencil draw out your katanas cut them out and file away the edges, just don't make them too thin otherwise they'll break very easily.
ok i'll try that tonight Decado

thanks for the idea

ok here are some more concept drawing (this time not in paint)

the first one is the kinda squad leader that has no visor down and has his katana drawn.

the second is just a normal guy with visor

I think that looks quite sci-fi but mabye its just me
