Hey guys, here is my recently finished scratch-built drop pod.

I just want opinions on its size and general apearance, and I'm not offering instructions to anyone on how to build it (just to be clear, I don't really want to get my thread locked, I know drop pods are a touchy issue).

It's built out of 3.5mm foamboard, 2mm mountboard (thick card), cereal box card and various pieces from my bits box (inc. terminator mini-shields, a combat shield and various bits from the SM vehicle sprues).

Including the fins, it's about 20cm tall, and 15cm across, so it is quite a bit bigger than a rhino, but I think it's about the same size as a forgeworld one, and it seems to me to be about the right size to fit between 5 and 10 marines in.

Thoughts and criticism please

P.S. if this is a bad thing to post about, I apologise, and feel free to close the thread. Cheers.

Looks very good, the symbol on the side(Black Dragons?) is rendered nicely. Can it open?

Yeah, Black Dragons.
There's some photos of bits of my army in the painting forum at the moment if you want to check them out.
I made up a computer image of the logo and printed it out, glued onto some thin card and cut it out, mostly because it's too much effort to paint it freehand on every panel and get it identical... :shifty:

Unfortunately this model cannot open, but I am hoping to make another one fairly soon and have great plans in that direction. It is quite alot more work though.
*weep*

Nice. I like the icongraphy on the sides. If anyhting the fins look a bit big for proportion, but I haven't got around to doing any yet, so I won't criticise!

Excellent model

Personally I wouldn't have put the stormbolter(s) on the outside since I imagine that it hangs down from the ceiling inside the pod. It would cost quite a lot to make one that is tough enough to survive atmospheric entry :D
Also, I would probably have made the fins a bit smaller at the bottom end to give it a sleeker look and it doesn't need huge fins for steering anyway. It's a prettier that way too :)

I put the storm bolter on the outside for a couple of reasons:
Firstly incase I play a WYSIWIG fanatic (the rest of my army is pretty definitively WYSIWIG aswell), and so can take it to tournaments if I should desire.
Secondly it give the model something of a focus point, so it will be a bit more interesting to paint and it gives the piece a definitive front.
Thirdly because I kinda imagine it (the storm bolter) slotting out of a hidden compartment the second after the pod lands, on a kind of rotation system so that it will be wherever it needs to be.

Looking at the forge world one again, mine does seem to have slightly oversized fins, something that I will try and adress with Mk2.

Cheers for your comments guys :)
