Hello all of you that managed to find one of my Project Logs.
This one will describe how I make the warband called Skyrars Dark Wolves, and the ideas and storyline I have to it.

This is purely an introduction to the Project Log.

Ask questions, comment my decisions and giveadvice. All is apreciated as I constantly strive to become better at what I do.

I bought a box of Space Wolves and Chaos Space Marines earlier today and set to put them together. I also purchased a box of Marauder horsemen to get to those amazing heads and axes. I took some pictures and have posted them right here.

Everytime I make something new I try to take pictures of it so everyone can put some C&C to it.

Looking good so far, keep the good work up.

I'd recommend picking up some Khorne Berzerkers in the next group of models, there's a bunch of nice bitz in the box, like torsos, running legs, and chain axes. Oh, and those sweet older chaos backpacks.

First Batch

Hello eeverybody.
Just finished off the first batch of 10 Dark Wolves. These are themed assaulters and an icon bearer. Have two more icon bearers as WIP. Only thing left before basecoating is some finishing touches such as removing mold lines and drilling barrel holes.

The next batch will be Dark Wolves with Bolters, the Aspiring champions, special weapons and the two other icon bearers.

When that batch is finished I'll move on to experimenting on some painting. I really need to get the grey scales right and the right kind of red. Any advice on these matters?

After painting is done I have to purchase a box of Berzerkers and some more Space Wolves. After that is painted and done I will move on to the Terminators and finish off with the tanks.

Pretty sweet looking models, can;t wait to see the paint jobs. Yeah the Khorne axes and pistols are nice and heavy looking, would fit well. Keep up the good work.

Magnets. Painting a gun is faster than painting a new mini with a gun. All my special weapon guys have magnetized special weapons.

As for the gaming angle on this, I think you should do fine with just melta guns. If you plan to always use the same list, I might have considered the flamers. Plasma guns are also good, but not that much better. Sure, you get an extra shot and longer range if you don't move, which of course you will do unless you're already in hand to hand.

Also, with three kinds of weapons you run the risk of having the wrong kind of weapon at the wrong place. With two squads of meltas and one of flamers, just run the flamers close to any unit that would be sensitive to being swamped by hordes. (In your list I'd say terminators. Sure, they're tough enough but they're just to few to deal with hordes if it gets close and personal.) The meltas really can't be in the wrong place.

Smart. I v'e never tried magnets with special weapons, only on terminators. I've got some small magnets left after an earlier project so I'll give it a try tonight. Stay tuned for updates later. I'll see if I got some running legs and maybe I'll do the champions too. If I'm lucky I might reach the basecoating stage tomorrow. If I do that I start experiment with painting next week.

I will probably not have time to work on the Wolves this night because my GF is going out with the girls, so I'm on baby-duty tonight (and plastic glue-fumes aren't that healthy for 3-months olds).

But despair not, my f(r)iends!
I can still develop the fluff a bit.

Skyrar and his 8th grand company was sent on an expeditionary mission to investigate a new warp-rift dangerously close to the Fenris Sector. On landfall upon an Imperial industrial world on the warp-rifts outer edge that had fallen silent therift suddenly grew immensely, consuming the planet and the whole solarsystem. Thus the entire 8th grand company had been trapped inside a warpstorm on a hellish planet.

After some reconnaisance they discovered that the planet had been subject to a massive daemonic invasion that had all but killed every living thing and left tha planet desolated for the Chaos Space Marines of the Word Bearers legion to build a forward base.

Skyrar and his Dark Wolves took it upon themselves to wage a guerilla war against thir ancient enemies. Totally cut off from any form of reiforcement or supply they were forced to cannibalise armour and and weapons from their fallen brethren and enemies alike. They also took on a more chaotic visual aspect to make their silhouettes look more like their enemies in an effort to blend in.

In time the Dark Wolves bodies took it's toll from the constant exposure to the Warp energies. Wulfen marks began to show and become frequent, and the curse culminated in the almost total transformation of Skyrar himself as he cut the head from the shoulders on the Dark Apostle reigning the plagued world. He became a strange abomination, a terrifying mix of wolf and man in body, but still normal in mind. He could use his armour and his weapons unlike many of his Wulfen brethren.

When the Warp rift finally broke it's grip on the material universe the Dark Wolves returned to their home world. But the Space Wolves cursed Skyrar as heretic would not accept the desecration of the companys armour and equipment.
The Space Wolves demanded that the last remnants of the grand Company handed over Skyrar for execution, but was met with refusal.
The 8th Great Comapny fought their way to their ships and set off into the blackness of space, in search of a place to lick their wounds and plan their revenge.

Not only was I on Baby-duty yesterday, I got the smackdown of a massive cold this morning, so this saturday wasn't the most prooductive. Scalpels and superglue and fever isnt the best of combinations.

But yet again, despair not dear readers and f(r)iends!
I finished off my two squads and took some pictures. I even followed the advice to use magnets on the special weapons, which was tricky with a giant band-aid on mu thumb (once again, fever and scalpels isn't the best of combinations).

Ths squad isn't exactly finished as I'm going to make some Champions and add the Khornate Icons to the poles.

Maybe early next week or after christmas. But right now I've caught a pretty bad cold plus there is christmas time and I work at a foodmarket in the deli = an extreme workload.
But I'll keep you posted and update the thread as I go along.

Do you have any picture of your magnetizised models? I would love to see how you make them.

So, let's discuss colouration.
I was thinking some really dark grey with rusted steel trim, like tinbitz+boltgun metal+black wash. Some chaos stars would be painted a glowing red (chaos black+scab red+ bloodred+sunburst yellow+skull white), to get a smouldering effect.
If I can pull it off that is.

Or is the red going to bright the model up too much? It's supposed to be dark, cruel and brooding. I was thinking green eyes.
Advice?


As for modelling, to have my troops choices finished I need to make the following:

4 Champions with Power Fists, of which 1 will be a Berzerker Champion.
2 Meltagunners (magnetizised).
1 Dark Wolf with bolter and chainsword.
2 Dark Wolves with bolt pistols and chainsword.
2 Dark Wolves with only bolters.
7 Berzerkers
18 models total.

Mold lines removed and barrel holes drilled. I'm a bit feverish right now so it might be sloppy work, but my fingers are itching. I need to base coat soon, or I'll never finish these guys.

So, here's an update to the thread.
Now all my Troops choices are comblete, modelling wise.
In orderto fit the marauder heads I've been forced to use blobs of greenstuff.
Tomorrow I'll do the basecoating and after that I'm ready for painting in the week to come.
Go to my updated Army List here, and see what changes have been done to the army. Notice especially the icons and the Berzerker champions fist.

I think the parts combinations are working rather well - some great looking models are coming out of this. The chainaxe guys look fantastic!

Just wanted to chime in and say that I'm really looking forward to monitoring this whole project, I think it's cool you're taking on an army like this. Good luck with everything, let's see some paint on those models, hmm?!?!?

Hello all f(r)iends and folks alike.
Today I got some more work done. It's slow but steady. With a kid to take care of and a woman to please my small grey soldiers doesnt get the attention they demand.
I primed them and put on the first coat of undercoat. I used Chaos Black spray primer and then brushed on a thin coat of Charadon Granite. The Citadel Foundation paints are amazing I must say. It's a little brownish-greenish-greyish and that is good as the first layer onto which the other colours will rest.
This is only the first basecoat. I'll put on a second coat that is a little lighter. Maybe just put a little Codex Grey in it. After that second coat I will begin the real painting. First I'll put on the metallics - Tin Bitz with Mithril Silver trim, and then the red tones starting with Scab Red with a Blood red trim. After that I'll do the details such as skulls, horns and the odd colour buttons and grenades. Then then first batch of basic grunts are finishd and I can move on to the second batch of grunts. Once that batch is done I'll move onto special weapons and champions which require some more attention and detail.

So, as I said this is the first batch of basic grunts, or Chaos Space Marines as we call them. There are 12 of them in this batch and 13 in the other (6 CSMs and 7 Berzerkers) and the third batch contains 3 Icon bearer, 6 special weapons and 4 champions.
When all that is painted I only have 2 preds, 1 land raider, 3 rhinos and 9 termies left. I'll be done in a yiffy!
