I was wondering if anyone had any idea about how well different SM chapters keep in touch with each other. I've just finished Warriors of Ultramar and it mentions that the Ultramarines and the Mortificators (one of their 2nd founding successors) haven't had any communication in 10,000 years. Is this the normal situation with chapters unless they happen to meet during some major campaign?

Also if some do keep in touch are htere any definite examples you can think of?

p.s. Am I alone in thinking that Defenders of Ultramar might have been more fitting a title, considering which company is involved?

I think relations between various Space Marine Chapters very much depend on the individual Chapters. Some Successor Chapters have no communications with their Founders, such as the Mortifactors and the Ultramarines that you mention, while others maintain closer ties to their origins, such as for instance the Dark Angels and their Unforgiven Successors, who often exchange information on the subject of the Fallen and work together to round them up.

Some Space Marine Chapters that do no share the same Primarch also sometimes collaborate, though I think it’s rare for them to maintain much contact after their common goals have been reached. Space Marine Chapters are pretty much designed to be self-sufficient units and rarely need to call for help from others, so regular communications between Chapters are rarely necessary longer than the duration of a specific campaign.

As for the novel ‘Warriors of Ultramar’, it was actually aptly named. The title refers not to the Space Marines themselves, but to the human defenders of the planet Tarsis Ultra which is in fact not located inside the Ultramar system controlled by the Ultramarines. If I remember correctly, it is Sergeant Learchus of the Ultramarines that praises the fighting spirit of the planet’s defenders by calling them true warriors of Ultramar, in spite of them not actually being Ultramarians, because their courage and discipline honour the battle traditions first laid down by the Ultramarines’ Primarch Roboute Guilliman.

Thanks, that answers everything I was wanting to know :)

As for the Defenders of Ultramar bit, I've also just got Codex Space Marines and noticed that the 1st Company are technically the Warriors of Ultramar, whereas the 4th are the Defenders. It was mostly meant as a joke.

its possible that certain space marine chapters and their 2nd 3rd..so on founding chapters meet secretly in 1 place to discuss, talk to eachother on certain subjects. If youv'e read the sould drinkers trilogy, 3rd book to b exact, they said the leaders and chaplains of the sould drinks, black templars, and imperial fists, all the other chapters using dorns geneseed meet secretly in a cave in an astroid.

R.A.P.T.O.R is correct. The Masters and Leaders of second and third founding chapters meet secretely and hold meetings and stuff discussing with each other.

I haven't read those books, though I'm considering it. I've only read the DoW books and the Uriel Ventris ones to date.
