Hi, I'm wandering if any of you can suggest the toughest non-special character HQ choices in 40k? So those with high toughness/wounds the best access to things such as terminator armor and storm shields (or equivalent) and FnP, eternal warrior ect?

Pretty sure someone else posted up another thread almost exactly like this..............

Aye. Smasher is a safe bet purely for durability. He will out live pretty much anything that isn't a blood thirster carrying a D weapon. I'd give him something a bit more fruity than a power sword though. A Chainfist and lightning claw mean he gets +1A and the ability to deal with infantry an armour.

The other option is to go for a Master on bike with gorgons chain and then put him in a bike squad. This then goes in the iron hands formation from Angels of death (which gives him +1FNP). This means he ends up with with 4W, 3+Inv and a 3+FNP. If he gets a warlord trait he can get a 2+FNP save at T5 with EW. Anything short of a D weapon is just not going to wound him. You'd need 33 Marines firing lascannons just to do a single wound on him............ and then next turn he'd wound a 5+ he gets his wound back.
