Well w/o knowing your army list i cant be that helpfull. but here are a few pointers.
the worst thing on the tau army list has got to be broadsides. these should be taken out first turn or as soon as possible. the next thing you want to go after will be the hq and elites in crisis suits you can pretty much ignore most of there foot sloggers since if they try to move w/ in range they can only fire once 12" out instead fo the full 30". kroot are weak as well and just send a squad of striking scorpions or banshees to knock em off. to take care of the broadsides and the crisis suites try using vipers or some heavy tanks with crystal targeting matrix. this will allow you to hide behind cover denying the rail guns LOS and then pop them a good one with the star or prism cannon. other than that hope it all works out.

I may have a solution.

Tau are te most horrible assaulters in the game, if you can get units that move 12 inches or put them in a Wave serpent or falcon and get them into close combat early then your gonna have a much easier time defeating them. Since the only really good assaulters they have are Kroot, or maybe that one special charcter they have, for got his name, but he has some kind of strange blade. Or get lots of dark reapers and crap loads of Star cannons and just launch massive amounts of fire power at them. Fight Fire with fire is prbobley the best solution, and if they have and rail guns, target those units first. Use a seer council with that warlock ability to double psyker ranges and mind war the hell out of them.

`Im a tau player here to help
Broadsides infiltrate striking scorpiones and prisms, and big guns with cristal targeting matirx.
Crisis= howling banshies(wave serpent), striking scorpions(wave serpent), avatars FIREDRAGONS, AND DARK REAPERS ALLOW NO ARMOR SAVES TO CRISIS!!!
Firewarriors=Warpspider shread through them, dire adenger, guardian with starcannon murder, and holy crap darkreaper destroy squads.
Steathsuits=starcannon own hear.

War walker with dual starcannon take care of all of my battle suits but tend to be railgun magnets :D

Same with wraith lord both scare the crap out of me

any particuly question you might have just ask me.

It is foolish to oppose the Tau.

Join them, and work for the greater good!
If ytou take a look in the tau connection with c'tan we have proved that they would probably be very good allies. I makes since according to fluff, and i used a tau/eldar army and it owned. First shot of the game was a prism tank and it destroyed a leman russ.

tau kinda suck, just assault them. they die. dont gear up to shoot the crissis, in fact, dont plan to get a single shot at any of them, because a good tau player always ALWAYS hops his suits. assault the suits and they are screwed. striking scorpions would be nice. broadsides are not very moblie, so take advantage of that.

You know Eldar is one fo the few armys that could conceviably out shoot the tau. The Eldar may not have anythig with a range of 72" but most of that distance is overkill. Rangers are a basic troop with longer range than a fire warrior and as The Exploited pointed out the heavy weapons for Eldar kick arse. Some might even call them cheesey. thats one of the things i liked about the eldar is that while one unit may not be good ay one thing its probably one of the best at doing somethign else and they have hella cool combinations. you can make one of the nastiest hand to hand armies or one of the nastiest shooty army. There are so many options to take out the tau its rediculus. the Taus greatest weakness is not in there lack of hand to hand but there lack of diversity. While not as bad as the necrons when it comes to this there are only so many options on how to field the bulk of your army. with the versitility eldar possess it can easily be a walk in the park with the Tau

I was having the same problem fighting tau but there is a simple solution, get a falcon or fire prism give it the ctm, holo fields and spirit stones jump in and out line of sight firing at the tau heavy support, with only 48 range or less simply outshoot them or destroy them in close combat without the worry of railguns or ion cannons shooting you on your way there.Guide the fire prism or falcon. :w

Oh jeez...I just got a killer idea. 'K, deploy towards the back. (assuming you're on a 4x5 table, what I play on) Your Fire Prism w/ CTM should be out of the enemy's LOS, preferably in a corner, with a guiding Farseer. On the other side of your zone, your Dark Reapers. If the Crisis Suits drop in to take pot shots at the back of your tank, they eat Reaper missiles with no armor save. Also, since the Prism has CTM, it can put its back armor directly against the obstacle/terrain it uses as cover. Use the Fire Prisms the way they were meant to be used. Use mucho War Walkers and/or Vyper squadrons. Sound good?

To kill firewarriors use a squad of dark reapers and their exarch (give the exarch fast shot) Use lot of Striking scorpions and Howling Banshees. Also get your Farseer and Warlocks or if you have one an Avaatar involved right away. They really help.

Destroy the tau heavy suppport by using a guided falcon or fire prism with ctm, holo fields and spirit stones (to withstand deep striking crisis suites) then simply outrange them. An ideal way to destroy stealth suits is to use a vyper with a starcannon. Hide the vyper behind terrian land beside the battlesuits then open fire.

All great ideas...

Only... I hate tau...i think they ruin the game with their ENOURMOUS firepower...something like a WL cant do anything against them if he does not start 12" away from their lines and get too make the first moves....anything else it would bee a peice of history...I mean the crisis is almost as heavily armed as a tank FFS!...in conclusion...I hate Tau...

either go in too CC (how the hell that can bee possible) or use the jump up,shoot, jump away thingy....cuz they cannot bee outshooted...commy bastards
