Am I horrible person for running a wych cult army in a 500pt tournament?

(Real Question: Any opinions on tactics at 500pts?)

Well... I suppose you'd just want to maximize the number of 6ish (wo)man squads with Raiders that you take. Wyches are pretty good at combat and with agonizers they can do a decent amount of damage. Raiders with dark lances and dissies will give you the required anti-tank and anti-infantry firepower.

Hope that helps a bit. :0

I would actually go with the *Counter-Attack* idea thats in our codex strategy (haha) section. But seriously, at 500 points, you won't be seeing many 48" range weapons (aka Missile Launchers and Lascannons)

Rather, you'd see more heavy bolter- esque weapons, that are much easier to escape their line of fire, with shorter range.

Basically, as the enemy comes a little bit closer to you, you pounce forward, take the charge, and assault where you want to. With this army composition though, I would expect to see you win a lot more battles through destroying enemy units/armies rather than taking objectives.

That's just not something Wyches are good at :p

Haywire grenades, not a good use for wyches but still can deal with light tanks.
still its a viable option for just incase.

Ok, I have avoided this for a while because I needed to consider.

To me a 500pt game is viable for a Wych Cult but that’s not the main problem here.

Its more the fact some of some of your the opponents army’s wont work at that level – case in point Necrons.

A Cult has enough variety to take down anything whereas some of the other races will suffer badly due to not being able to take that expensive but much needed upgrade, a character or include that essential armour 14 vehicle.

Whereas a Wych Cult already has the best assault troops in the game as standard, the ability to use blasters for anti armour, cheap transports (again armed with anti armour Lances) so that you can be guaranteed the charge and still have the points left over for a few squads of warriors to run distraction and virtually swarm anything left over.

So this leaves you with feeling “horrible?” Nah, just practice your evil cackle, go forth and capture as many slaves as possible and make the enemy fear your wrath!

Good luck and good hunting.

P.S. tactics will depend om your army composition.

yes that is a very evil thing for you to do! Slaneesh should have fun toying with your soul...

Anyhow, I think a wych cult would work very well at 500pt. Like previously said, take a unit of wyches with haywire grenades and a succubus with the goblet of spite for anti-armor, then just pack in the wych squads.

Also, warp beasts would be VERY effective at that points value, and especially since you can take more that 0-1 as per normal codex restrictions.

Tell us how it goes if you do end up doing this.

Mostly because quite a few people where I usually play think wyches are cheesy enough as is.

Wyches aren't cheesy. Yes, they're terrors in close combat. Shoot them. That pretty much solves anyone's problems with wyches, when a squad of 10 guardsmen will kill 2-3 of them per round with single-shooting lasguns.

It's just frustrating to have my melee centric squad sit in combat with them for 6 assault rounds and have each side only lose a couple guys.

Your mother was a squat and your father smells of eldar-berries! Now Leave before I taunt you again! =p

Seriously though, thats what you get for getting in to assault with the second best assault unit in the game. :3 That said, just be glad some of the old Wych weapon effects didn't get ported over to the most recent codex. Before a succubus could get like 6 attacks in assault and 8 on a charge with a set of hydraknives.

It's true, trying to figure out the probability of a dead marine was terrible with wych weapons from the old codex.

What is this cheese you talk about? A wyche cult is physically composed of pewter, plastic and hopefully glue and paint. Fielding any mini carved in cheese, or proxying any unit for a lump of cheese would be impractical and definately not tournament legal.

Having said that, Im pretty sure that you will want to gave warriors and not wyches in any game smaller than 750 points, and quite possibly the foot slogging shooty variant. Remember that the board doesent get smaller in 500 points, so your wyches will have to travel further to engage your the enemy in CC, and with the number of wyches lost to enemy fire while flying/running combined with your already dreadful model count you are in for a beating if you go the way of the wyches.

You could also just field a maxed out punisher archite, those things ROCK in small games where the enemy usually lacks the kind of CC characters that can stop her sompletely. My arcon has a quite impressive track record in small games, and I cant imagine that archites are any worse at it.

Oh, and do post an army list for us to comment :)

Well that really depends on the opponents. Maybe you don't play on a smaller field at 500Pts. But I do, anywhere from 2x2 to 4x4.
I warn all my opponents to not play me on a 4x4' table - last person who did had is IG in close combat first turn and was packing his army by the third.

I can see your point, but if the intension was to learn and have the game end quick, I think the 4x4 is fine? don't you? ::Hiccup::

*puts on my plastic Armchair Archon tormentor helm*

Ahhh! I love it! you are learning fast young Archon!

It would be very "in character" to use that very line! Ingenious really, yes, by all means tell them as you escort your opponent to the 4x4 table (with your arm around their shoulder) and tell them you are "learning" the game. A true Dark Eldar "wake up call" for your friends as you lead their models to your slave-pens.

Slaughter them mercilessly by 3rd turn and still be home in time for Corn-flakes (or Khorne-flakes should I say).
