I've always wanted to know how the school system works in the USA. I mean, what age are the people in each grade? Sometimes I hear people talking about 7th grade or something but I wouldn't know wheter that means they are 5 years old or 15 years old. I'm from Ireland so the sytem is different here. ;)

Kindergarten = 5-6 years old
1st = 6-7 years old
2nd = 7-8
3rd = 8-9
4th = 9-10
5th = 10-11
6th = 11-12
7th = 12-13
8th = 13-14
9th = 14-15
10th = 15-16
11th = 16-17
12th = 17-18

Roughly, at least.

The actual school setup (classes, etc.) can vary. For example, I'm on a seven "period" schedule - I have five classes in 45 minute periods, with 5 minutes between classes, then I have a 45 minutes lunch. Then, I have my last two 45-minute periods after lunch.

Others schools do a "block" schedule, similar to a university.

here in the us we have grades they are kindergraden, 1st,2nd,3rd,4th,5th,6th,7th,8th, and then there is highschool grade 9-12 in most place. and people in the 7th grade are around 12 or 13, and then in eight grade they are around 13-14,

Block and regular

I've taught on both the block schedule and the regular schedule. At least at the high school level. Both are used commonly throughout the states. High school in the US is secondary school in europe, from age 14 - 18.

Regular schedule works like this:
6 Periods per day, 55 minutes each.
Same classes throughout the year.

Block schedule (4x4 as we use it here):
4 Periods per day, 90 minutes each.
4 Classes for the first semester, 4 classes for the second semester.

The Current Fad is block schedule, though it will probably change again soon. We educators are damn indecisive.

Schools are different all over america. The school systems are resonsible at the town and county levels. Except for the ages for grades, the class times, school day length, and what grades are in the different level schools can change.
Alot of schools up in the New England area have a special school for Freshmen which is 9th grade. Also Some schools (once again more in the Northern U.S.) have Elementry school from Kindergarten to 6th grade then 7th and 8th as Middle school. Then finnaly 9- 12 as high school.

yea thats what i have. My school works on a period scheduel. I have IB which is international and idk how it works in other places, but here we just make it a harder reg. class.
Also we only have school for 5 days at a time (except for some rare montessouri places) that usually run for 7 hours from 7:30 or 8:00 to 3ish.

Our schools years are also a bit shorter than some other countries (mostly from asia) we have 3 months off for summer and we get breaks for major holidays and some of the more minor ones like MLK day and stuff like that. (although MLK was Very important in our history I still consider it minor because there is no gifts or fireworks :shifty: )

Nah.

Several areas are like that - it's either set up like that, or with a 9-12 high school.

Honestly, I think 10-12 is a better setup... 9th graders are too immature, IMO, for high school. At least, the freshmen here..
