I recently played against another guardsman and he moved his Vendetta Gunship up to 24" is this for real? I thought they could only go flat out up to 18"

You could, of course, have checked his codex

Watch out for these tactics:
- Scout move of 24", thereby claiming a cover save before the game begins
- Outflank, only move 6" with the Vendetta and shoot all three twin-linked lascannons, or move 12" with the Valkyrie and shoot his rocket pots and multi-laser
- Gravchute Insertion: moving flat out and dropping the transported unit (using the Deep Strike rules) on the way
