What are Your Heavy Choices?

I have Two Standard Russes and a Vulture.

The russes hold down my flanks and the Vurture swoops down to givem hell.

Plus the Vulture adds to the futuristic style of my "Federation of Sol" army.

Usually I'm running this configuration, even though I like to experiment every now and then.

Leman Russ Battle Tank
Hull Heavy Bolter, Heavy Bolter Sponsoons, Smoke Launchers, Extra Armour 163p.

Leman Russ Battle Tank ""
Hull Heavy Bolter, Heavy Bolter Sponsoons, Smoke Launchers, Extra Armour 163p.

Leman Russ Demolisher
Hull Lascannon, Plasmacannon Sponsoons, Smoke Launchers, Extra Armour 193p.
Personally prefer the footslogger aproach, but I usually use:

Heavy weapon platoon (6 HB and 3 LC)
and a pair of demolishers kitted out just like the one Kaiser posted.

The demolishers take the flanks with a platoon and hellhound while the heavy platoon holds the center while supporting a third platoon's armoured element...8)

Gets the job (mostly) done and half the guys are statistically gaurenteed to come back able to fight again.:D It's a bit of a point sink, so the whole thing is more common in +2k games.
2 LRs and a Bassie.

I also run a drop army that proxies a pair of 1/48 blackhawks for vultures, because I just can't bring myself to throw that much money into a plastic kit.
depending on the size of the game, I usually just take 2 bassies and 1 russ, although sometimes I just take 3 russes.

I don't like taking single bassies, because of the limited range of indirect fire, but a pair of basilisks deployed in opposite corners can control the whole battlefield, and the additional russ can usually be deployed by one of the basilisks to provide a shield for it, while my hellhound shields the other. It's a nice setup really... Anyway, that's 3 ordinance lobs per turn, with virtually unlimited range (I mean... unless your board is somehow more then 10' wide)

just mortar teams? why would you do that to yourself!?!
I'm a two Leman Russ and One Bassie kind of guy for my "legal" guard army. For my other Guard armies that I play for fun, then the list changes to just one Vulture, which may seem like two little, but Valkyries with a Lascannon, Heavy Bolters and two Hellstrike Missiles (work just like ordinance) a piece can really give someone a bad day.
Demolisher:
Hull HB, Sponson Plasma Cannons, HK Missile, Pintle Heavy Stubber, Extra Armour, Track Guards

Basilisk:
Indirect Fire
Depending on the size of the game I will almost always take 2x LRBT with 3xHB combo

In larger games I will add a LR Demolisher with either 3x HB or 1xLC, 2xPC.

Because I like the abuse above all, but secondly because 'it just wouldnt be right' for my ************** to be equipped with anything better, and i do still fill the 'tank' fiend fix with a pair of chimeras, for veteran teams "barbeque" and "plasma", money willing.

But then again i dont know exactly whats in the current IG codex for heavy selections, besides the usual array of tanks and such right?
I take one Russ. HHB, SHBS, Smoke, 158pts

Next would be Bassie w/Indirect

Then I would take another Russ llke above or

Demolisher, HHB, SHBs, Smoke and maybe EA (Attacking) or

Demolisher, SPCs, HLC, Smoke (Defending)

Cheers!

hellhounds work better imho then a flamers in a chimera, and for less.
In 1500pts I take one Russ and one Bassie. They work nicley together. Bassie splatters what the Russ can't see and the Russ in turn splatters what the Bassie can't see.

Then the infantry kills everything else. Go the Footsloggers! :ninja:

At 1500pts I take 2 Russes with HHB, SSHB and smoke. I also take a Demolisher with Hull LC, SS Plasma Cannons and smoke. I generally play against meq armies so those pie plates always get there points back.
2 Basilisks and a heavy weapons platoon loaded to the brim with lascannons.

Ever seen an army with 21 mortar launchers? It is NOT cool, especially since they have indirect fire.

1 Mortar Support Squad = annoyance
7+ mortar Support Squads = change of pants
How do you want to attack

If you are looking for a superb indirect, yet effective weapon, you can do far worse than the basalisk. If you are lucky enough to have two of them, your oppontent will have serious problems.

However, if you are looking for a more adventurous approach, I suggest you try more Battle tanks or demolishers.

I love basalisks, but have won more than one match by the punch caused by Leman Russes.

Sephe.:w00t:
On the other hand, 7 mortar squads in heavy weapons platoons are pushing 600 points? 650?

For the same number of points, I can field 2 Leman Russes with HHBs, an indirect fire Basilisk, and 2 Hellhounds. None of those units are too worried about mortars and their templates are bigger, stronger, and, except for the Hellhound, longer range than the mortar templates.

If mortars are a point sink at 80 points, they're going to be a bigger point sink at 560 + commanders.
I personally would rather go with two basilisks and my lascannon squads. I've seen 7 mortar squads in action though, and I've seen em' work. With their ability to pin multiple units every turn, it can be devastating.

Definitely works better against some armies and not others
