Hey guys and gals..

There are alot of them out there.. but this question factors on resource gathering..

But what is your absolute all time RTS?? C&C for its quick arcade style firefights..?
Age of Empires, any one of the series and its various timelines..? Dawn of War? Winter Assault? Thrones and Patriots? The Warcraft series..? The list can go on and on..

But i want to know what everyones fav is..

At the moment.. I would have to say all time favorite would have to be...

Age of Empires 2.. Absolute classic which my friends and I still play..the ability to contol forces in troop formations and being a lover of early combat history it wins hands down.

Have your say..

I'm sorry but I have to go with Rome Total War. You can't get a better game in the genre at the moment.
I would have to say my favorite is Winter Assault. Who doesn't like teleporting with and army of termies or seeing a noob rush with guardsmen?

After this I would say Starcraft just because its a classic.
Command and Conquer Generals or the Total War series.
rome total war
i have to say Rome Total War as well, particularly the Barbarian invasions expansion- night fighting!! he he

but WHEN will they add naval combat??
I'd say Rome: Total Wat is my pick right now, never played the expansion or even most of rome itself(exams in the way, w00t IB!). I agree they should definately have naval combat, i hate auto resolve:(
Starcraft. Innovative units, decent graphics, and cinematics to die for. Homeworld comes in as a close second, though. It had a fantastic story-line.
Homeworld takes the #1 spot for me, but that is just because I am in love with space based sci fi.

Second is Winter Assault merely because I can finally play my beloved Imperial Guard for once.

Worlds Collide
would Warcraft III and it expansion count in this becuase if it does that would me mine or maybe Dawn of war, I have Winter Assault but my computer won't let me play it for some damn reason. wish i could
LoTR: Battle for Middle Earth. I can't really say why it was so much awesomer than Rome Total War and the more recent Age of Empires III, which I also really enjoyed, but I justy liked BfME a ton... can't wait for the sequel... March 2nd ^.^
Rome Total War is a game which occupied so much of my life it's obscene..

The trouble with Medieval and Shogun is that, once you've played Rome, you physically can't go back and play them. They don't feel smooth or elegant, every battle has a tendancy to turn into a meat grinder, and you don't get that feeling of joy from watching a unit of superheavy cavalry smash something..

Homeworld was a really good idea.. but I hated the interface, and the fact that winning basically revolved around bringing more firepower to bear than the enemy. I'd like to see a space combat game with more resemblance to old style naval combat (i.e. the ability to cripple systems quickly, and a high emphasis on maneuvering rather than static firing.)

However, for the number 1 spot, I'm going to pick X-Com 3: Apocalypse (squad level RTS!) as, whatever purists tell you, it was the best X-Com style game ever made, and considering my love for squad level strategy, this is naturally going to make it one of my favourite games ever made. Why the hell someone can't make a Windows XP patch so I can play it, I'll never know..

The recently released UFO: Aftershock borrows some nice elements from it, but just doesn't have the same charm.

Hmmm.. I never played Rome: Total war, I think i will have to obtain a copy..
But in this game i understand from the other versions that its not really a resource gather type game like say.. Warcraft, C&C, Age of Empires or Dawn of war..

I really liked Medieval had alot of game play out of thast especially against people.. Go the mounted charge.. but yeah the question still stands for those Rome fans..

Whats you favorite resource gathering, build that mad 'your not gunna get in' base RTS ??
Lot's of good choices out there.

I think I had the most fun playing Command and Conquer: Red Alert, so there's my vote. I may pick up a copy of Yuri's Revenge just so I can revisit that game.

hmmm im not a massive fan of resource gathering games, although my favourite would have to be Black and White 2 for the pure innovation on offer

I completely forgot about that series. That were a few amazing games.

I thought I posted this yesterday, but apparently I didn't. There is a new Total War out Medieval 2.
The_Giant_Mantis, since you're into squad-based games, I strongly recommend Star Wars: Republic Commando. Follows the standard FPS routine, but you have three squadmates that you can assign tasks and tactics. Tell Sev to go stab a battle droid while your buddies man some turrets, and you go strafing and stabbing droids in the face. I loved that stab feature... but yeah, the game, while nothing too special, merged the FPS and RTS genres quite well, and while it wasn't as "allmighty" as Halo, I enjoyed it quite a lot.

republic commando is good fun, a bit of a darker take on the star wars universe, and its nice to be a kiwi once in a while

Yes, I have seen it, and thought about playing it. The trouble is, I have bad memories or repeatedly ****ing up at Hidden and Dangerous (I was only about 15!) Somehow I just couldn't get the fact that the strategy elements needed to be combined with the FPS action elements, got very confused, and screwed up badly.

X-Com was an isometric strategy game. The first two were turn based, but they mercifully scrapped that idea in the 3rd. Apocalypse was just plain, addictive fun rather than a massive slog which took half an hour to resolve each engagement.. and the tech level curve was also much better than the originals.

Along similar lines.. anyone remember the Commandos/Desperados type games.. Those can almost be considered a subgenre in themselves. I enjoyed them too, though not nearly as much as X-com.

Conventional resource gathering you say, probably C&C generals, because I got quite good at it (unlike any other 'generic' RTS game.)
