If your just starting out it depends on the kinda army you wanna play. Ill list the style and what you want lots of under it.

Static defense:
HQ Etheral
Troops Lots of Firewarriors should easily outnumber your other selections 2:1
Elites
Crisis SUit, 1 squad
No fast Attack
Heavy Support 1 or 2 three man broadside units
Hammerhead w/ railgun or ion cannon
::Basically this army stands and fires. Firewarriors are awesome models I humbly think so. YOu sit there and let the enemy come to you and you destroy it as it does so.::

Mobil Offense
HQ
Shaso w/ Crisis Suit Squad
Elites
Crisis Suit Squad
Stealth Squad
Troops
2 or 3 firewarrior squads
Fast Attack
Pathfinders
Heavy Support
Broadsides
Hammerhead maybe 2 depending on points.

::This is what I play mostly and one of my firewarrior squads is in a devilfish. I like the mobility and your opponent is never sure where your gonna be. What I think the main power of the army is in its crisis, stealth, and broadside suits yet these are also the most fragile. They are also the greatest looking. Id buy firewarriors cause you need two units for the army and Id buy some crisis suits. But thats just me. Have fun. :) ::

Yes you should buy the Tau Battle Force. As far as El Mudd said you are going to spend alot of cash quickly. I for one love crisis suits, they jump fire, then jump back with the abilty to Rapid fire. In my normal club Tau force I have seven Crisis Suits. Mudd discribed a static defence method to use, right now i dont think you should "shoot" for that one. Why you ask? Each one of those broadsides cost 30 bucks, now if you are just starting and dont have a job that army is going to be hell on your wallet. That army though is the basic Tau army thats what they do well. It probably doesnt do too well in a table quarters mission. I play a more dynamic Tau force, more of an offensive army that is ment to crush space marines. This may sound crazy but if you like crisis suits and want a really good basis for an army you should buy 2 tau battle forces.

An alternative thing is to buy your models second hand. Hey, when you can get a broadside for 15 bucks instead of 30 you are doing good. Also Ebay has some really cheap battle forces I got mine for 70 bucks (thats with shipping) from a store called... http://www.hillcity-comics.com/role_play/g.../gw/40k_tau.htm. Really good deal.

Yes it is, very much so. I am happy I got my battle force and nothing was broken, missing, or worped. So over all they do a good job. (Well from what I have boughten.)

ya im kind short on cash cause im only 12 so i cant spend too much
Yeah thats always a problem, I have a friend that is 12 (well my friends brother) is 12 and he is jumping all over the place with armies and not really playing his main one (Dark Angles). So if you do start investing i suggest you get your moneys worth out of your models and stick with your Tau army until you get a job then go on if you want. A good rule of thumb is don't buy more models if the ones you have are not painted. If you some how fall out of the game you will not regret (as much) buying your army.

Yes my way is expensive. ALl these armies are. I speak about 2000pt armies and I am sorry if gave you too much information. I didnt take into consideration your money limitations. What the other folks said before is good, second hand stuff is good. Especially for Tau where people have played them and found they didnt like them. My games store has auctions often where we can buy other folks stuff who dont want it anymore. Also get the book, figure out what you like best and buy one. Whether a fire warrior squad or a crisis suit then put it together and paint it. Then buy your next one. I suggest starting out with one suit $20 and a firewarrior squad $30. The crisis will be your HQ and the firewarrior squad your troops. The next thing you buy should be another firewarrior squad. Just like its seen in the codex. Thats a total of $80 or cheaper if you can get it second hand. But thats what you need to start playing. That gives in you points about 500 pts if you give them everything you can. Try it out against a couple of people and when you get more money buy more items for your army.
I hope it goes well for you, in comparison I have spent so far on this army about $600. A usual 2000 pt army will be about $300-400 unless you get it second hand. I usually buy from my game store though to support them since they let me use their space to game.
Good luck! :D

warhammer 40k is a hella expensive game, but its worth it at the end if u enjoy it as much as most all of us do.

id say, focus on one army, and decide how u like it. If u want more, try making smaller armies go around so u have a diversity of many different armies to play against.

else, focus on one army and focus forever, heh, u'll soon build up ur forces to a huge amazingly powerful army, which is also very kewl.

If you buy the Codex and make the army on paper before you go and start buying your stuff you will save alot of money. I have about 2500+ in my Tau and its only been about 300 bucks. I knew what I wanted then I bought it.

I buy what I think looks good. I do make a scratch army out once a I get a book but the effectiveness once its played sometimes differs from what I thought. Overall I try to play with everything and Ill buy some o the forge world stuff too such as I just purchased a barracuda. I like to try out everything especially what looks cool and will be fun to paint which so far for me has been everything in the Tau army. :D

I would go with a Battle force because you get three crisis battlesuits you can use one as a Shaso and you would have a Hq and for the other crisis i would use them as bodyguards.

You also get two troop squads 12 firewarriors and 12 kroot warriors

Never forget the Drones people often overlook them but I use them to deep strike and go behind tanks and they usually kill them for me.
