Ok so here is another argument that i have been having against, well everybody as i have nobody on my side of the argument, i don't know if it is cause i am wrong or if it is just that nobody wants me to get the spell of without having to deal with magic resistance.

the wording for magic resitance is that if a unit is TARGETED by a spell that is being cast you ad up to X number of dice to the dispel attempt.

the wording for the wind of undeath is that once cast it EFFECTS all enemy units on the table on the roll of a 4+

My main argument is that the wind of undeath has no real target, the actual magic is summoning hordes of ghost's to come attack your enemy's therefore an opponents MR wouldn't effect it. Another point for it is that in the dark elve faq wind of undeath and comet of cassondora are lumped together for purposes of the ring of hotek, as neither spell are targeting the unit with the ring of hotek the only way for the ring to effect the spell is if the caster is withing 12'' of the ring when attempting to cast. Well in that line of thought you never get MR when dispelling the comet of cassondora as it dosn't target a unit it targets a spot on the ground, even if the MR3 unit is standing centered right there it dosn't matter. my line of thinking was it is the same the magic is going twoards SUMMONING the giant meteor not twoards the unit so no MR.

the opposing arguments are that the comet effects everything not just enemy units, in order to hurt a unit it has to target it and as it has a chance to effect every unit it targets everyone of them. i tried to argue that it dosn't effect your army because the vampire has placed wards around his units as part of the spell, and that you don't need to target a unit to effect it as shown with artillery and scatter dice.

well there was alot more than just that so i want to hear from everybody out there. what do you guys think.

You are correct Magic Resistance does not come into play when casting Winds of Undeath

This is similar to Casket of Souls from Tomb Kings. It used to be that you could use your Highest effected unit's MR but there has been a change in rules and now MR can not be used unless the a unit is specifically targeted.
The same applies for the Black Horror Spell from dark elves as it is not targeting a specific unit.

This past Tuesday I came up with the same discussion with an Empire opponent. For magic resistance to work a spell has to specifically target the MR unit. Such as with a magic missile or Curse Of Years.

Because Wind of Undeath effects the entire table and does not directly target the MR unit, they have no magic resistance.

They errataed it this past year. Here is the exact phrasing. Check the warhammer Faq part 2 on the main GW site.

Page 95, Magic Resistance, first paragraph. The
second sentence should be replaced with:
‘The number in the brackets indicates the
maximum number of extra dice that may be rolled
when trying to dispel each spell that is targeted
against the magically resistant unit.’
If the spell doesn't say "targeted" then you don't get magic resistance.

well i need more help, several people at the store refuse to give way about this, so where does it say that the tomb kings casket dosn't trigger magic res anymore, and if anybody has anything else to help throw in there as far as hard evidence goes.

they where stuck on the whole it targets every unit on the battlefield because it effects every unit. can't get em off of it even after stating that the dark elve faq states that wind of undeath dosn't trigger the ring of hotek because it dosn't specifically target the enemy unit and showing the errata'd paragraph about the magic resistence needing to be targeted.

Just tell them they're being ignorant assholes. The spell has to specifically target the unit with MR. There's no MR against the casket because it doesn't effect just one unit, it effects the table, not specifically targetting something.

The old TK errata states that you get MR against the casket, but since then they changed how MR works. Now the spell in question specifically has to state that it "targets" a unit with MR. They make the distinction between target and affect. If you are affected by a spell, like the casket, or winds of undeath, you don't get MR.

Ha agreed here. Spell doesn't target as mentioned and Magic Resistance only works if you have to choose a target for the spell. Just give them a slap, the GW staff should really be with you on this and if they're not give them a slap too.

On another note bring up the list of spells from any magic lore, if a spell targets something specifically you'll find the Gw has worded the ruling to included the word "target" somewhere, if not then the word is deliberately discarded.

I mean just tell them if you had one unit that has a MR of lets say 4. Why would the entire army benefit from it? That is exactly what they want to let happen which is dumb.
