Hi,

I was putting my brand new whirlwind together and came to a halt when I was putting to gether the launcher assembly. I can't decide between castellan or vengeance.

The thing is, as far as I can see, the castellan is exactly the same as the vengeance, except you can decide to fire it so it leaves behind a minefield.

Am I wrong in this assumption?

I just can't see why not take the castellan when it does both things if you want it to.

I'm probably wrong but can someone more experienced please clarify this for me.

Cheers.

There are actually two different turret mounts for the Whirlwind. One looks quite similar to the old turret, so I assume it fires Vengence missles. The other has larger missles loaded, so I'm assuming those are the Castellan missles. You can change between the two from game-to-game, just be sure you don't make the mistake of glueing the turret on.

Click on this to see what the Whirlwind sprue looks like.

Damn it!!! Stupid Americans!! You've got it all!! Kickass gun laws, you can by individual sprues, and your money is even better then ours!!! Im moving.
Then may I recommend moving to the UK? The pound kicks our dollar's arse at the moment. And don't forget our current President is an idiot. Now, let's end the politricks right here and I won't report your post or do anything to your rep... this time.

As for the sprues, I have no clue why it's that way. It's not available on the UK site either, and that's where the game started...

Back to the question...if the Castellen hits a unit, it is treated as if it had been a vengence, right? So, unless I'm wrong about that, why would you EVER take vengence missles?
Vengence missles work quite well againt medium infantry, like Tau Fire Warriors and Eldar Dire Avengers (neither get an armor save). Castellan missles are better against close combat-oriented light infantry like 'Gaunts and Slugga Boyz (who only save on a 6), when they have to come to you. Remember Castellan Missles are AP -, which means almost everyone gets a save.

Yes back to my actual question.

After thinking about it and discussing with friends, this is how I believe it actually works.

You decide before the game (or when you put together your model), if you want vengeance or castellan missles.

Vengeance are fired normally with the stats as in the codex.

Castellan are fired like a castellan, ie guess or line of sight, and then you place the ord. template for the rest of the game. You DON'T get to wound untill the enemy moves in or through the template.

So there is actually no initial wounding, its like dropping mines from above and waiting for someone to walk on them.

I believe Chaosbrynn has a great tactica article on whirlwinds, and that basically cleared it up.
