Highlighting [Specifically Tau Flesh]

I was looking at the UK Games-Workshop site today (I find it much better than the US site) and read an article about painting Tau skin. They said to paint it Shadow Grey, then highlight it with various whites.

My Question, what exactly does Highlighting mean in this sense. Is it basically drybrushing, but only to where it paints raised areas?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Drybrushing is one way to highlight but you have less control of where the paint goes. Normal highlighting is quite simpe, it's basically a lighter colour ontop of a darker one.

What the purpose of highlighting is to show depth and shadows on a model, thus making a better look than a plain flat base. Here's a quick guide -

Using a dark colour of your choice (usually go for the darkest shade you're willing to use or add a touch of black to the colour) paint that all over the section you're using. Then using a lighter shade, either the next one up or by adding white, go over the area again but this time and on recesses on the section miss out. So what you should have is a lighter colour with a darker version in the recesses (ie folds of cloth or flesh etc), this is a highlight.

This is a good site for learning the basics, there's an entire section named 'The Clinic' and here you'll find what's needed - hopefully.

Painters Dictonary

This has defiantions for most painting terms, hopefully this will help as well.

Thanks a lot. I'll probably just do the drybrush version, as I don't have any of the colors needed between Shadow Grey and White. I may be able to get to my local store tomarrow, so we'll see.
