Hi, i just won a small local painting tournament, and with it a small gift satificate and had no idea what to use it for. That must meen i need to start a new army.

I have wanted to make a fun/silly army for some time after finishing my vampire counts, so the choice fell on these great/silly creatures known as ogres.

I have a lot of ideas for the theme of the army, with the main theme being Kichen'ish. I have a lot of ideas for that (somthing i will post some pictures of once i choose one of the prototypes) but since it's my first try with the ogres i dont know what i need to make a great army.

I made a list and was all like, this will rock. Then i looked over what you guys say on the matter and tossed it. (so you dont like the giant ehh)

But i was wondering what i would need to have a fun allaround army that might win some of the time? I like the hunter, or rather it's pets, and love the Butcher, so those are musts. But what of the rest.

I always try to make 2250 point army because i attend a turnament each year called Giant fanatic, and the last few years we played 2250point.

If anyone could give me some pointers on what rock i would be Happy as a pig eating a pie.

Yours Benji

Hello, benji. Welcome to LO. I love your enthusiastic post. No way, no how am I not going to respond to this request. If I can help make you as happy as a pig eating a pie, then I'm certainly going to try.

Ogres are very cool models and have unique rules. They can be tough to learn, but they're always fun.

If you like the giant, then take the giant. Eventually, Ogre Kingdoms will get a new book. It might be a while, but they will eventually get one. Giants will surely benefit from new rules, but even now, they still have leadership 10. They can still afford to lose combat and have a reasonable chance at passing a break test. Just don't engage ranked units. Attack other large targets and your giant will likely dominate combat.

I never, ever take my Treemen in against Giants. I still suffer miserable dreams of my Treemen's first encounters with a giant. Giants demolish large targets.

Giants can also support your hardhitting bull and irongut units. Imagine a flank charge with your giant into the side of Empire Swordsmen while your Ironguts hit the front of that same unit.

Take a unit of two of bulls and plenty of Iron Guts. Lead Belchers usually pay off, and even Gnoblars have their roles. Gorgers are a no-brainer. Take one with your free rare spot.

Thanks for the post dave.

Should i take 3 or 4 Ironguts and bulls in each regiment?

And how about that scraplauncher is it worth the points.

Also, i dont like the models but those Yhetees have the best movement with the Scale Terrain and M7, are they a must?

I'm starting the greenstuffing of the bases today (need black and white tiles on all the bases). Hopefully we will finish somthing that can be posted in a week or so(hope posting somthing will help me finishing everyting faster).

Well i'm off to my local shop to get my price from the turnament, then i will start working on the first Ironguts.

I have taken units of ironguts up to as many as 6 per unit. Gives extra bodies to suffer some casualties, and if they make it across unscared, additional strength to impact hits, and against 25 MM bases infantry, more attacks. The extra unit strength wieght will make your fear alot more effective.

Yethees are a question of personal taste. They work with a very unreliable leadership for a stand alone unut, do not have access to a musician, and a fairly expensive. Even though the models harbour 2 hand weapons, they only have 3 attacks per model.

The flipside is: the most mobile unit in your army. scaling terrain can be invaluable in fights where terrain constricts the movement of your large unit of bulls. they have quick access to flanks, and will hold their own against armies with low weaponskill.

I generally opt for the hunter with a pelt and 2 kitties, alot more bang for the buck.

Thanks. I'm happy that they are not a must, i will run the hunter instead.

I made a list and i would like to have you'll check it out, if something is totally wrong. I know it should be posted in the army list forum so if ya want me to i will move it.

Here it comes

Tyrant – The tenderiser – Deathcheater – Gut maw – heavy armour – 2 sword gnoblars – luck gnoblar 321

Butcher – Bangstick – Dispel scroll 180

Butcher – Halfling cookbook – Dispel scroll 180

Hunter – 2 sabertusks – Greyback pelt 220

3 x bulls – bellower – ironfists 130

3 x bulls – bellower – ironfists 130

4 x Ironguts – bellower 202

4 x Ironguts – bellower 202

25 x Gnoblar 50

25 x gnoblar 50

8 x Gnoblar trappers 48

4 x leadbelchers – bellower 230

Gorger 75

This gives me a total of 2018 points, and since i'm going for 2250 there is still somthing to spend (in case i made crap again).

On other news i'm almost done greenstuffing the first 4 ironguts, and i cant wait for that moment when i can start paintig them.

Sadly the bases are not ready yet. I need some tiles to be created before they are done (it will look like a kichen floor)

Well that is all for now, hope you will give me some great ideas

Split leadbelchers in 2 units of 2, greatest flanking value around. they also keep the skirmishers at bay on both flanks if need be.

I would try and bump the ironguts to 5 models, gives them more impact and durability. Save points by using additional hand weapons on the bulls. Ironfits never seem to come very handy unless using light armour, and it just ends up weighing down.

If you are aiming for 2250, you will need another dispel scroll. I would sacrifice the cookbook for this.

Warbanner for your Irongut tyrant bodyguards. Runemaw is also acceptable if you feel you will fight magic heavy armies.

Thanks, you know i think i like the scraplauncher idea so i think i will go for that.

Also on other news i finished converting the first 4 Ironguts, and started painting them. For the skin i'm using the same paint mixture as you are dave. I think the final highlight is a bit to extreme when highlighted, o i was wondering what you did . Was it just a lot of blending og did you make a 5th paint?

I got some pictures with my girlfriends phone, and i hope they turned out okay. At least i hope you can se what the prototype of the bases look like.

Yours Benji

25 x Gnoblar 50

8 x Gnoblar trappers 48

2 x leadbelchers 110

2 x leadbelchers 110

Gnoblar Scraplauncher 165

Gorger 75

This comes to a total of 2238 is this more right? I only made the changes that made sense to me, like making a bodyguard unit for my tyrant and more dispel power.

Also i forgot to mention that the Ironguts in the pictures are the Clean Team, that is why they have brooms and trash bags.

The floor is painted with gloss vanish to make it shine and then covered with some gore.

Tyrant – The tenderizer – Deathcheater – Gut maw – heavy amour – 2 sword gnoblars – luck gnoblar 321

I think the wyrdstone necklace is better to use than the deathcheater. Coupling that with the Greedy fist and a luck gnoblar you have a very good chance of destroying magic weapons. Also I don't think sword gnoblars are good, they have a ridiculously low chance to wound someone. But they're cheap so if you like them, keep them.

Butcher – Bangstick – Dispel scroll 180
I wish all butchers could be like this guy.

Butcher – Dispel scroll – Dispel scroll 180
I'd suggest putting your halfling cookbook back on. Your guys are fast should be in combat by turn 3, so you shouldn't need THAT much protection.

Hunter – 2 sabertusks – Greyback pelt 220
I REALLY think hunters are not worth taking. A third butcher with something like a hellheart or grut's sickle would be better off. More magic defense and a better magic phase. Go all out or go home. But if you really like the Hunter, I suggest running him with NO items to keep him cheap, or to give him the mastadon armor. Greyback pelt doesn't help the hunter do what he's good at.

3 x bulls – bellower – ironfists 130
I've been having success running 4 bulls with full command and a lookout gnoblar to put my tyrant with. They keep him alive and he provides the damage dealing the pulls lack.

3 x bulls – bellower – ironfists 130
Ironfists are not always needed. If you need to find some points to get rid of, start here, if not they do help. Just remember, using an ironfist to get +1 attack means your ogre clubs aren't armor piercing anymore.

4 x Ironguts – bellower – Gutlord – Standart Bearer – Warbanner 267
DOn't really need a gutlord. So expensive. I find running 3 units of 3 ironguts is good, and placing a butcher in each unit makes the unit 4 wide. NEVER expect to get a bulls charge. Just be happy when it happens. Any smart player can easily counter your bulls charge. That's why people play with lots of small units instead of a few big units, because 3 ogres sitting in the second rank are 3 ogres not killing something.

4 x Ironguts – bellower 202

25 x Gnoblar 50

25 x gnoblar 50

8 x Gnoblar trappers 48
I always bring 9 trappers. The reason being that they usually are away from the general's leadership and if they panic they usually keep panicing until they're off the table. What 9 trappers gives you is the fact that they have to kill 3 now instead of 2 to force a panic test.

2 x leadbelchers 110
2 belchers are nice, but a friend of mine told me to try using 3 in a unit and let me tell you, I like it. No one who knows leadbelchers fears them. Average 5 shots a model, so your 2 will hit 5 times and wound 2-4 times. A third belcher brings your wounds up to like 4-7 range. Also there is the chance of throwing 30 shots and that does scare people. Last game against some skaven I threw two 8s and a 10(no fooling). It was glorious. Of course if you throw more misfires it'll hurt more, but no matter how many you bring you're always gambling with these guys. Also 3 belchers in a unit can bulls charge.

2 x leadbelchers 110

Gnoblar Scraplauncher 165
I love this guy. First time I ever shot him, he killed 11 slayers. God bless their little hearts.

Gorger 75
Bring two. THEY ALWAYS GET THEIR POINTS BACK(except the time I charged 5 swordmasters and he died before he even got to swing). I can't even begin to tell you how many heros and war machines these guys have gotten me. The best would be killing blow a darkelf lord on coldone on turn 6 to net me like 450 more victory points.
I love the idea of this army!

Anyways, I've been playing ogres almost on a weekly basis for around 7 months now. Let me give some advice. Its the red text in the quote.

Wow thanks a bundle for that review of the army list, i will redo it once I'm done with my politics project (When I'm having a break i wont be looking into any books, NO MORE BOOKS).

I was so damn lucky a few days ago and met an old friend that bought an ogre kingdoms army back when they came out, he paid someone to gather and spray the army but found that ogres suck so he just put them on a shelf never to Se the light of the day again.

Until i talked about this project I'm doing and he sold me this army for less then the price of a battalion box.

14 bulls 4 Iron guts 2 bruisers 1 hunter 8 gnoblar trappers 50 gnoblars and 3 yetees.

That brings me a long way towards that 2250 point army.

I started the green stuff job on the lord as soon as i got him, and here is a picture of the guy. Cool miniature. I will make he's great weapon into a great Spoon later today i hope.

Well that is all for now, cya later.

Ahhh last night i won a small 1000 point tournament and got my self 2 butchers so i almost have the entire army now. So now all i need to do is paint, and a lot of it. I finished the first 4 Ironguts, and I'm pleased with the outcome.

Here are some pictures.

You might notice a small recycling mark on the bag, because in the ogre kitchen, nothing goes to waste. Not even the old chef that was killed doing the great feast last winter. Gooood stew that was.

I have played 5 500 point games and won 4 and lost 1, and from that it seems like ogres are no good, but no one players ogres so people don't know how to defeat them. Something that is quite easy. (i even had a demon player that use flamers on trappers)

Those same trappers are now my next project since they, even the time i lost, win there points back every time.

So what to you guys think about the Butherboys, i know it will be hard to comment on the painting but any comments are welcome.

I hope to finish a regiment each week, and if i can keep this up i will be done with the 2250 point in about 3 month, that would be a record for me. The undead army of 3000 points took me 14 month. :D

I love painting them ogres, the skin is so nice, and everything is so big that you can highlight and shade it, Sweet.

Well that is all for now.

Thanks, yea they are so forgiving in so many ways.

I'm painting the gnoblar trappers, and the skin is quite good, but i fear they will become so Brown. There is a lot of pelts and loin cloth. Brown in brown. I would like to paint them gray, but I'm not sure how to do a smooth and easy gray pelt. Probably something with shadow gray to fortress gray, but i don't think i can pull it of.

Do any of know how to do a smooth gray pelt?

Question:

Why don't Ogre players typically take several (as many as possible) big units of Leadbelchers? A friend of mine is starting ogres and if what he says about their shooting is true, a single unit of 3 or 4 Leadbelchers can take out just about any unit. Boom. Sure, they take a long time to reload, but why not take more of them? Is there some special rule I don't know about? My friend says he'll take 3 units of Leadbelchers at 1500 pts and it only goes up from there. If there's any downside to them, please, let me know! Thanks!

#23 ·
They roll an artillery die for their shots but if they misfire they hurt themselves. The more in the unit the more chances to kill yourself. Then when you really look at it, the damage they do isn't the greatest. On average they'll do 5 hits each. Probably need to roll 4s to hit and the 3s or 4s to wound. A unit of 3 with shoot 15 times, hit 7.5 times and wound 4 to 5 times. Depending on who you're shooting at they can save a few of them.

I usually just run 2 units of 3. Some times they score big, some times they don't, but with a unit of 3 you can still get a bulls charge off the turn after you fire.

Remember too they're great for charge redirecting. Bring a musician and flee from any charge to set up a charge for one of your ironguts. When you rally with belchers, they auto reload their guns.

Ah! I think I see the root of my confusion: Leadbelchers roll on the Artillery Dice is the number of shots not HITS! My friend told me the number rolled on was the number of autohits (like an organ gun). I was terrified of recieving 20 S4 AP hits against whatever I was fielding.
