Ork Flakka Trakk and a Trukk

I have started some work on the new plastic Battlewagon - and finally gotten around to putting one of my trukks together. Here's the scheme so far:

Battlewagon 1 - front cabin, front chassis (four wheels) and part of rear cabin built. Awaiting purchase of other battlewagons, so I can supply this one with four or six more of the same style of wheel. This will be a Stryker or ASLAV style Battlewagon.

Battlewagon 2 and Trukk 1 - cut and shunt to make the Flakka Trakk. Left over bits going into sundry vehicle projects.

Trukk 2 - being built pretty much standard, with a touch of kustomization to distinguish it from other trukks.

Here's the Flakka Trakk so far:

It comprises the track units and rear bed of the battlewagon, joined to the cabin and front wheels of the trukk. Wheel arches and front pieces come from the old plastic war buggy set.

The 'chassis rails' that join the two structures are from the straights and L-pieces in the modular movement tray set. Fuel tank is from the Imperial Guard vehicle accessory sprue. (The wheels and tracks aren't glued on; I will paint the body before attaching them.)

The trukk has been built pretty much out of the box, but with a lot of the spiky bits clipped off. The truck-bed sides from another trukk kit have been cut down to close in the truck bed a bit more. The gaps in the piece behind the cabin have been covered with Forgeworld ork glyphs and pieces of strip styrene.

Some nice ideas there! The Flakka trukk looks like an bigger Ork version of the Land Rover Scorpion as well as a nice simple conversion. I like the idea of putting together a wheeled battlewagon rather than building it as intended. I'm not a fan of the new Battlewagon kit, I think it's an awful minature - but you might have persuaded me that certain parts might be useful to convert trukks. Do the front wheels of the battlewagon kit match the rear wheels of the trukk kit by the way?

Difference between Trukk and Battlewagon wheels

Thanks for the comments! I do like both the battlewagon and the trukk kits, but I feel that they are so individual and orky, that it is difficult to personalise them. Obviously there are lots and lots of extra bits, but in important places there are very distinctive structures that will be the same on every model. For instance, the front plate of the truck, or the driver's cabin of the battlewagon. So, the challenge for me is to start disguising those areas and making them my own.

Good question about the wheels - they are not quite the same between each kit. Both have the 'round' and 'square' style wheels, but the rear axles on the trukk are a tiny bit smaller than the ones on the battlewagon. Also, the battlewagon wheels have a bit of a raised rim on the inside of the wheel, where the axle goes. This means that the battlewagon wheels are a little loose if they go on the truck, or the trukk wheels are a little difficult to put on the battlewagon axles. Got that?

This shouldn't be a challenge for even an amateur conversion - just use some imagination and your hobby knife... carefully!

Here's a pic that shows the differences:

Dey sees us rollin', deys be hatin'

I have found a toy that could be the source of Deff Rollas for the Battlewagon:

Bruder CAT Roller with Black Reach Nob for comparison

Roller and Battlewagon - comparing the sizes

Turning it over it looks like the rollers are slightly too big for the Battlewagon. I will either go with it, or cut slices out and smash it together with some 'saw blade' type disks - so it would be a little narrower.

I will add spiky bits and carve the roller up a bit to represent the grisly results of combat squishings. I am also toying with the idea of cutting out a thin styrene sheet of a face of Gork (or Mork - fight it out yourselves) biting a raggedy Imperial Eagle, so that the tracks of the Battlewagon will show the Aquila being desecrated wherever the boyz have been.

That's how we roll.

Deff Rolla and Flakka Turret

Deff Rolla

Deff Rolla 2

Flakka Turret

Flakka Turret 2

The rolla was cut down from the toy roller, and a couple of plastic disks inserted. The disks were just cut from scrap plastic and then clipped into a saw blade shape.

The turret is a 1/48 tank turret (KV-2 Russian tank) with brass tubes and scrap plastic bits. Grots, hatchest, battle damage etc to be added later.

Got it!

Thanks for that info on the wheels! Sloppiness / tightness of wheels on axels is a minor problem, solved by greenstuff or a drill respectively!

Liking the way these conversions are shaping up - particularly the battlewagon. I think the big, wheeled APC (or AOK as I like to call 'em) looks better than the halftrack thing you get in the new battlewagon kit.

I'm still not a fan of the new battlewagon - every time I see a picture of it, it looks wrong. Too short lengthways, too narrow from the front, top-heavy from both angles and bizzarely, too wide from above. Your take on the battlewagon is much better - the two sets of wheels with a gap between make it appear longer and much less brick-like.

Since the battlewagon and large trukk wheels are the same size (and the half-track conversion looks ace!), I guess I'll probably end up taking the plunge and buying a battlewagon kit. Don't know what I'll do with the rest of the kit, but the wheels will replace the smaller front wheels on my trukks and the tracks will probably be used in a half-track trukk conversion of my own.

(P.S. AOK - Armerd Ork Karrier)

Flakka Trakk now with added Turret

The main body work on the Flakka Trakk is complete. I used most of the hull of the 1/48 KV-1 tank, just gluing it together and sawing it off at the right length. This made the whole car a bit tall, but it looks better in my hand than it does in the photos. I added a couple of cut up deck pieces from the Trukk model at an angle, to give it some bulk and make it look more like an ork construction.

Then I got lazy and made 'baskets' at the back, rather than continue the sloped sides. These can be used for stores or to carry grots. I will probably use the new plastic grots in these, to represent grot riggers.

Deff Rolla!

Every ork vehicle needs one. Here's the latest work on mine:

Front view
Rear view

The plating is scrap plastic (including an expired credit card) with plenty of rivets. Spiky bits are from more scraps, clipped to shape. The hooked spikes are clipped off the Black Reach plastic Warboss, who got some minor conversion treatment of his own.

Test Fit of the Deff Rolla

Here you go then:

Deff Rolla Test Fit

Deff Rolla Test Fit (side view)

Deff Rolla Test Fit with the roof on (a bit more bulky)

Deff Rolla Test Fit with the roof on (so the Deff Rolla doesn't look quite so out of proportion)

Deff Rolla Test Fit with the roof and turret (looking a bit better)

Deff Rolla Test Fit with the roof and turret (in fact it is still too big, but it doesn't matter as much)

As I was building it I was worried that the Deff Rolla would be too big for a Battle Wagon. Turns out, it is too big (probably right size for a BattleFortress though).

But with the Battlewagon bulked up, it starts to look a bit less silly. Anyway, Orks are never subtle about this sort of thing, and the driver doesn't actually need to see over it to squash the enemy.

I will add a few more cogs, cables and glyphs to the arms. And rivets. Everything looks better with some rivets on it.

I undercoated the Flakka Trakk with Citadel Black spray paint, and then went over it in Tamiya FS-33 Dull Red spray paint.

Flakka Trakk - undercoated with Krew
Flakka Trakk - undercoated with Krew 2

I made the driver pretty much standard, with a Burna Boy head (I like the goggles) and a gunner from the Trukk box. The Grot riggers are made from the Ork Grot Mob plastic set, with bits added to the weapons to make them look like tools. The cables are twist ties from the backs of toys - the sort that keep the toy attached to the cardboard packaging.

Flakka Trakk Krew
Flakka Trakk Grot Riggers

I will make a Mekboss for the top turret - probably holding binoculars or pointing and shouting at incoming aircraft. I also have to do a lot of weathering, dirt and stowage (ammo and jerry cans, mostly).
