Burn the land and boil the sea, you can't take the sky from me.
Greetings, everyone!
For those of you who don't know what the term "Browncoat" refers to (or can't figure out the quote above), a Browncoat has two meanings, according to Browncoats.com.
The first is a fictional faction of soldiers in the brilliant TV series Firefly and movie Serenity. The Independence Faction, dubbed "Browncoats" because of their brown trenchcoats, who fought for what they believed in (anti-totalitarian government) against the Alliance.
The second is the term that Joss Whedon (creator of Firefly and Buffy the Vampire Slayer) gave to the fans of both the series, and the film, and is the title that many people now wear as a badge of honour.
Some History
Firefly was a TV series that would fit best in the genre of "Sci-Fi Western." It was on the air a few years ago, but due to many reasons (namely that the station, Fox, didn't like the show, and it is my belief that many who watched the show on that channel couldn't share in the humour, etc. provided by it) it was cancelled, which brings many people, including myself, a fair amount of grief.
In short, Firefly (and its new DVD-released counterpart, Serenity) is a work of art. It has a brilliant storyline, great humour, and it is a Sci-Fi that can be related to. A lot of the issues in the show are issues that can be related back to today. There are a lot more things to it, but I'll leave it at that.
There are several (large) fansites on the web currently. I highly suggest that those that don't know much about the series search these sites to get an idea, and if interested, purchase the series at least, if not the series and the movie.
Why All This?
I, myself, am a newly converted Browncoat. My family owns the complete series of Firefly and I have seen Serenity multiple times; we will own it soon.
There is no lack of fanbased websites out there, but none connect to LO - until now.
This is my attempt to rally the Browncoats of LO into action. Here will be a place to discuss the series and the movie, the plots, the characters, possible projects, and finally, how we might be able to help not to only increase the ranks of the Browncoats but to see if we can help the ever-growing army in helping Joss Whedon to keep his dream a reality.
"We, Browncoats, are the fans of Firefly. Loyal from the first time we saw it. Willing to go the extra mile to support it. Trying to find meaningful ways to put our fanaticism to good use." ~FLYHEAD, Browncoats.com
