Is it pretty much expected to lose your lord+unit when VoDing more than once?

Into assualt marines, a tank, off the board, into a wall...

I tend to take a lord with a VoD and a res orb + 20 warriors.

Should I just drop that VoD and add a phelactory and gaze or something?

I personally don't like the VoD as it is a huge pints sink and more often than not the lord and squad get killed in a hail of bullets.

If you are going to drop it take a phase shifter for the ever needed invulnerable save and possibly phlacetry (sp?) as well, it make the lord far more survivable and he is better at holding the army together.

If they always get shot to death, then you should invest in a solar pulse. One turn on near invulnerability is priceless, well... maybe 120 points or more (fire warriors to land raiders)

The problem with warriors is that you NEED to take a big risk just to get them close enough to fire. So with immortals, you can take a breather and put them a safer distance from those pesky impassible terrain features. I never rely on getting a "hit" result, I always judge what would be least likely to happen (moving 10" south to catch a model in a fuel tank), do it, and disintegrate the squad that is easiest to kill with immortals. So any marines are generally a no-no, but the land raider behind them is fair game. One time I veiled about 8" to the left to get a devil fish fully in range and disintegrate all three weapons off , immobilize, and shaken it two times. I just can't say how much fun that is.

If I remember correctly, 7 is the most likely amount to be rolled on a 2d6.

Some important tactics I use:

Lord + Retinue
Use Immortals when you VoD. They shoot farther thus allowing you to place your squad farther away to reduce the chance of scattering into something bad. Plus, with their T5 they are much more likely to survive shooting.

Defensive VoD
Never use VoD to attack early in the game. If you try the old "I'll VoD behind him and blast him to pieces" it will usually turn into "what a dolt, I'll just turn my whole army around and kill the whole group". I used to try this tactic and my squad never lived past turn 1. Only teleport the Lord and Immortals when they need to move for a better firing position. Let the Immortals act as a back-up to your Warriors until they need to be moved. don't feel that not VoDing this turn is a waste. If you jump too early you're more than likely to get shot to pieces because nobody wants Immortals at their back door.

Offensive VoD
The only time to use VoD offensively in the first two turns is for tank hunting when some terrain is guaranteed to shield you. This is a great tactic for taking out artillery like Basilisks that typically have no defending units near it. I typically save my offensive VoD until turn 3. Even when deep striking the monolith I would only offensively use VoD on the turn after the monolith arrives so you have two squads of Warriors in addition to your Lord.

I wouldn't bother spending any more points on VoD and instead change your tactics. I lost over ten times in a row to my friend who plays Eldar, I just couldn't beat him. Then he played another Necron player who played more of a defensive role until turn 3 when he went all-out on the offensive. The Eldar never had a chance. Since then I changed my tactics to be a bit less aggressive on the first few turns I have not lost another game.

Using the veil of darkness (yes I try to use the names as it helps noobies) is a tactic that requires pratice and more practice. You need to know when to do it where to teleport to (near your target but away from the army) and how to avoid the misshaps.
